JessicaParticipantpretty much just the title. i feel like the mystic mondays deck is pretty overrated, i kind of don’t understand why it’s so popular. of course it all depends on people and their attachment to the art and whatnot but still, just a fun question 🙂

Are there any decks that you think are overrated/underrated?

I put off buying for a while because I felt pressure to get a “real” deck with more adult mystical/magical artwork or intense historical background. Finally accepted that Cat Tarot was the one that kept showing up at stores for me. It’s got cartoon kitties and sparkles, but it’s still tarot. I feel like there’s this air sometimes about “ooh, get this deck cause it’s going to be so brutally honest isn’t that amazing!! whooo.”
It’s a bit like physical exercise- you don’t need to do a marathon every time. Sometimes just strolling through the neighborhood is good too.

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amI think the New Era Elements Tarot is underrated. Yes, it is monocrome, it is very hipster style, has unique but well thought-out courts, and some cards are showing enough harsh truth that they might be tough to look at for some. But the cards are true to the RWS spirit without being jet another copycat, and artistically beautiful. I find it speaks volumes to me. Another occult tarot pearl, the Zillich Tarot, also didn’t get enough attention since the first hype over it was done. The Urban Tarot is imho another very important tarot wich I haven’t seen discussed that much. But that might be because both the Zillich and the Urban have Crowley Toth vibes and do require some study to read them as intended.
Overrated, i have to say Wild Unknown either. It is beautiful and nice to work with if you want something totally different, but it doesn’t have that much meaning in the pictures. I also was disappointed by the Fountain Tarot. The art is so pale that it is hard to read without natural light and makes no impression on my soul.

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amThe Kawaii Tarot is one of the most affordable, simplest, yet most useful decks I own. Hard to say it’s underrated as everyone who owns it moves it, I guess for $15 or so it’s just a fantastically humble deck.

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amI don’t really vibe with any of the super minimalist ones like mystic Mondays or golden thread or that one other really popular one that I can’t remember the name, but I recognize a lot of people like them.
Modern Spellcasters (which is different than modern witch) has gorgeous artwork and diverse people in it and generally pretty true to original RWS imagery but I hardly ever hear people talk about it anymore

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amUnderrated is the Dreaming Way deck, the imagery is so clear to read and also whimsical. It really opened up tarot to me as a beginner even though it wasn’t my first deck.
Another underrated deck is the Parrott Tarot by Margaret and Thom Parrott. A lot of Thoth based decks are Very Serious but this one has a lighthearted touch, which I think is important. Whenever something or someone takes themselves too seriously I can’t take them seriously.SmoothDragonfruit445
GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amElemental power tarot. It had so much hype around it and it was my first deck ever. I considered giving up tarot because I just couldnt with that deck. Was housing insecure so hopping from Airbnb to Airbnb (had savings to hold me over, but as I was an unemployed recent graduate nobody would rent to me) so I left it in a drawer in the Airbnb, hopefully some other guest will find it and use it well.. I did some googling on “good deck for a newbie” and Elemental Power Tarot really badly wanted me to have cards that clearly say in words “six of wands” or “ace of cups” because the imagery didnt make that clear often times too.. went with Everyday Witch Tarot as the reviews on Amazon said its good for newbies and LOVE it. I am glad I didnt quit tarot over that bad deck experience

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amCrowley tarot. I can understand why people wouldn’t want to use it, but it’s often seen as just another design, which is not.

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amOverrated: Modern Witch. The artwork’s gorgeous, but the quality is terrible. I waited a year and a half for this deck to be published and I can’t use it because it’s so thick and easily damaged – gutted.
Underrated: Fifth Spirit Tarot. A brilliant blend of binary-busting imagery and bold yet sophisticated symbolism. It’s linen-finish too so handles like a dream. It feels like an instant classic to me.

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amI think the Wild Unknown is overrated. I see this deck everywhere and every time I just think “meh”.
Underrated I’ll go with Zombie Tarot. It’s very on-the-nose with the imagery despite also being funny.Carded_Tarot-Tales
GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amHistoric decks like the Marseille and Ettiella are underrated.

GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amHalloween tarot is underrated.
Modern witch probably overrated. I really don’t like the 4 of swords in it. It has major 9 of swords vibeslilahunnisett
GuestFebruary 2, 2021 at 9:03 amDifferent strokes for different folks eh? Some I vibe with some I don’t.
