Hoping for some clarification. Confused about what position 7 is meant to be in the traditional Celtic Cross Spread. I’ve read three different things about what it’s intended to represent: (1) “Advice,” (2) the querent’s “Attitude/Influence/Perspective,” or (3) the querent’s “Power.” I’ve only conducted one reading using this spread and used #2 for what position 7 represents. Then after the reading I conducted a 3-card “Advice” follow-up reading. What does everyone else commonly use for the meaning of position 7? Thanks!

to me 7 is self 8 is other, or 7 is inner 8 outer, 7 action 8 reaction

like one read the 7 was empress and 8 was rev 4 wands

so to the querant I said you are trying to live your own best life and the message from the world around you is that you’re throwing it all away (it was a breakup situation)

then card 9 is the pattern that usually comes around that you will listen to 7 and overcome to level up to 10, or you will cave to the pressure in 8 and restart the cycle at card 1

thats how i read them 🙂

In Waite’s original design he had two positions to represent the querent: the Significator and “Himself,” position 7, which was basically a waste of a position. Eden Gray split up Hopes and Fears, leaving Hopes in position 9 and moving Fears to position 7. I’ve been using it that way since 1972, but I’ve renamed them. Position 7 I see as a reaction against the changes implied by the near future card, and as all manner of self-limiting or self-defeating attitudes and behaviors (I call it the psychic basement and the Root of Self-Limitation). Position 9 I changed to Aspirations: not just things we hope for but are willing to work to get (the Root of Self-Motivation).

I’d be happy to send you my Celtic cross guidebook I made for myself. It covers this, and a way to read the relationships of the cards. Just dm me and I’ll send it over!

Edit: not self-promotion just a handy tool I personally use
