Cleansing vs Purifying

I was thinking about the intentional use of cleansing versus purifying…for example cleansing is washing impurities away while purifying is a rendering process. When would you use a cleaning ritual versus a purifying ritual and what would the main difference be in application, aka what tools would you use for the spell?

Cleansing, like you said, is washing away impurities, like washing veggies for dinner sort of only in a magical sense. Purifying is more prepping something for work. To stick to kitchen analogies, it’s kinda like popping a roast in the oven for dinner. Personally, and ritual work is largely a personal thing, for cleansing I use things like salt, sage, my besom, and make a point of removing energies I don’t want hanging around, whereas with purifying, rather than sweeping energies away and just scaring them off, I tend to sort of…. I’m not quite sure how to word it to make sense, but ‘push in the light’ I guess. Again, like cooking a roast, you aren’t taking cold out, but putting heat in. Hope that makes some iota of sense.

To me cleansing is like tidying away your nicknacks, putting pens back in their pen pot, filing papers away etc on your desk to get a clean working area. Refreshed but still has your stuff that you want/need around. Purifying is getting the can of compressed air out and blasting the crumbs out of your keyboard, scrub the desk down, get rid of all nicknacks, clutter, papers etc. Fully deep cleaned and ready for anyone to step in and use the space.

Personally I like using music to cleanse as I find it cleanses the negativity away without disrupting the positive.
