This is long, but please bare with me and I’ll get to WvP connection.

So a few weeks ago, I thought I was depressed.

I was so tired could barely get out of bed. Chronic headache. Then one morning I woke up and also felt heavy and listless. I thought maybe there’s something physically going on? I called in sick and made a doctor’s appointment for the earliest available date, 2 days later.

They ran a bunch of blood work, asked me how my mood was, and guessed I probably had a sinus infection. I KNEW I did not have a sinus infection, but thought ok I’ll take the antibiotics your giving me. A couple days later my blood work came back and it said I was positive for Epstein barr virus (EBV), but I’ve had mono before and this didn’t feel like it, and it’s rare to get it again after having it in adolescence (it’s always in your system after you get it but it can reactivate).

I had COVID in July, so I wondered if there was a connection. Sure as shit, a quick search found credible studies that show COVID seems to be reactivating EBV in people and driving some of those with long COVID symptoms, especially fatigue, headaches, and brainfog. My doctor hadn’t heard of this, and on top of it all the antibiotics they have me interacted with EBV and I broke out in a terrible head to toe rash for days!

It was such a disheartening medical experience AGAIN: doctor and even MYSELF first blaming it on ‘my mood’, crappy guess work diagnosis, harmful side effects, and lack of critical recent knowledge on the doctors part. I believe in science and medicine, but I hate our system. It feels no one truly listens, knows, or cares. I know this has been talked about much in WvP and loved that recently a doctor came in to ask for advice in a recent thread.

I’m getting a little better, but I can still barely concentrate and stay awake more than 10 hours. I’m struggling to return to work after taking 2 weeks off. At least knowing what is avaliable happening with my body and why is helpful.

Damn. I’m sorry you’re going through this. I had no idea there was a link between covid and mono. I had mono when I was a teenager and had covid last month.

I believe in science and medicine too and agree that there is a huge problem with the health care system.

I’m glad you know what’s goung on and really hope you start feeling better!

I got chronic fatigue and a host of other health issues after EBV. I just never got better. It took me 4 years to be diagnosed. the long covid symptoms are very similar.

My previously healthy 33yo daughter has long Covid and history of mono. Her EBV was reactivated, there absolutely is a relationship.

Sorry to hear that you’re going through this. It always *kills* me when doctors give prescriptions before they get test results. 😫 I hope you are feeling better soon.

sometimes it feels like I believe in science-based medicine more than my doctor. I am switching doctors (soonest is Oct 31, halloween gods help me) and will be printing out studies about the different conditions I want them to investigate, and studies showing possible connections between them, to bring with in the hopes that they can be shown reason (if necessary). Wishing you a speedy recovery

I don’t think I have had COVID yet but tested positive for an EBV infection in June 2020. I’m struggling with long-COVID-like symptoms. I’m trying to get evaluated for myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). I’m basically bed bound. This system has failed me and millions of others. Look into pacing and avoid the push-crash cycle. Do not make this worse by pushing it will debilitate you

I do want to say EBV is not the only thing that can cause mono
