I know this question might seem a little ironical to post on an astrology sub. But anyway, is there a connection between superstitious thinking or “religious/spiritual” extremism and hard Neptune aspects to personal planets? Particularly Luminaries and Mercury.

I know about the possible addiction/mental illness/homelessness part, but this is something I have also noticed in charts of people who fall into extremist paths including cults or religious fanaticism. To be fair however, these charts have also had some Sun-Mercury/Uranus conjunctions quite closely aspected, so that might have had a substantial effect on the perceived “rebellious or contrarian” nature. It’s like these people feel a strong need to separate and distinguish themselves from general society, (which is fine) but even to excessive degrees.

PS. I know not all Neptune heavy people descend into madness; most of the ones I know are very open, accepting, spiritual (in the great sense) deeply empathetic and artistically gifted people. I don’t mean any disrespect to Neptune heavy individuals, most of yous are wonderful! This is just a few instances I’ve noticed, and I was wondering if anyone else has too.

Definitely. Neptune squaring Sun can sometimes create some degree of messianic complex.

I’ve got Neptune conjunct Moon & Jupiter and sextile Mercury, Venus, Pluto. With Pisces rising. Thank the gods I have a lot of Virgo in my chart or I’d probably have become unmoored from the earth by now. Or more than I already am.

I have Neptune on the MC opposite my moon. I find that in order to rationalize my experiences I create a narrative that doesn’t exist. It’s not as crazy as it sounds tho. I try to force a “glass half full” outcome and sometimes it leaves me questioning what is real about a situation. I would really like to overcome this because I find this aspect negatively affects me as a coping mechanism. I don’t find that I turn to substances but I do occasionally fall down a rabbit hole of radical spirituality. I will do anything to rationalize.

I think spiritual stuff can be at times a slippery slope. I do think hard Neptune aspect can encourage some spiritual extremism/spiritual bypassing, unless it’s mitigated with a decent amount of earth energy or Saturn or whatever that might keep their feet a little more in reality.

I have Neptune on my ASC in cap (opposite chiron, squaring my nodes & Mars) & have a deep interest in the spiritual, but tend to keep it a little more “fact based” or grounded within study & comparisons. (My mercury is conjunct pluto in Scorpio on the MC & trines my pisces moon, which squares Sagi Saturn) I have consistently compared different religions, mythologies etc since I was a kid (even making charts etc). I like when claims are reinforced by historical writings or artifacts, and I think it all (every religion) boils down to particular spiritual human archetypes. I can’t imagine myself ever being drawn into a cult really, I might consider it for the community & alternative lifestyle aspects but probably not for any spiritual belief. Sometimes I’ll dabble in more spiritual things but generally feel better when things are very much grounded in reality.

I am particularily drawn to the virgin archetype & all the different iterations of her (I have Diana & Ceres conjunct the ASC, Urania on my Libra Venus, Hekate & Pallas opposite the POF… & several other “virginal” & mothering themed points in my chart). My mother and both my grandmother’s & my ex mother in law, all had babies (or were pregnant) before they were married & were on the receiving end of lots of religious guilt & pressure. I also believe 3 were sexually assaulted though am only 100% sure on 2. I had a same experience in my youth. So from a young age I have had virgin stories & sexual guilt/repression of feminine energy instilled in me as well as anger & outrage toward that repression (& that the “right to sexuality” – theirs and ours – seems to societally belong to men) which might be why I’m so drawn to that specific theme in mythology – processing generational trauma.

i have Neptune on the MC exactly trine my mercury, and honestly it can make people hard to understand me sometimes. i know i definitely can come off as a “heads in the clouds” type individual. even with a positive aspect it can make my mind / speech feel a little clouded and convoluted. i also subconsciously speak Around subjects instead of being direct, something i’ve recently noticed and am trying to work on. i think there’s a connection to neptune there for sure

My aunt has moon conjunct Neptune in Scorpio. She is an ultra right wing MAGA follower. She self subscribes as a Christian and reads the Bible. She wanted to be a minister, but since the Bible says women aren’t allowed to speak in church, she abandoned that path. She is also an Aquarius sun with Aquarius rising. To me, she is extreme and fanatical and believes in most right wing conspiracies.

Just blindsided over and over again

I’d say so. Neptune tends to blur and make things murky. I have my Sun tightly opposite Neptune and I have found I cannot see myself clearly -like at all. How I think I’m coming across may not actually be reality. Also I’m really prone to daydreaming and getting lost in a fantasy, perhaps not wanting to see the truth of a situation for what it is sometimes.

Whilst Neptune has a lot of positives, such as increased creativity, empathy and compassion for others – I really don’t like it’s influence at all, I would not say it is the cause of but it makes it hard for me to have a good sense of self-esteem (based on my chart).

One thing to keep in mind though is that psychology researchers have found a negative correlation between religiousity and IQ. The lower the IQ, the more religiousity you’ll find.

I’ve heard that Neptune resorts to most delusional or most blissful so it’s kinda hit or miss

You either get a super supporter of MAGA or
A spiritual guru/psychic or maybe somewhere in between ??? Lol

I would think so but at the same time a square aspect can offer an opportunity to change, whereas with a trine the energy just flows so the person may never see a reason to change.

An opposition could mean the person is delusional if they “choose” the Neptune and ignore the other planet.

Just as an example, I had a client with almost all of her personal planets in Scorpio, and in opposition was just 1 planet in Taurus. She did not relate with Scorpio energy AT ALL. She worked at a Church, was very reserved and traditional, and was only getting a reading from me because her friend paid for it. Lol
