This was hanging up at our campsite when we arrived. Does this mean anything, or were the previous campers trying to trick us?

Celtic cross. In Hobo culture it means this place is a safe space to be in and will provide shelter. Its also a Christian symbol, but also has been representative of the 4 elemental points. Word of advice before you go around drawing it everywhere its also a very common symbol among white supremist and neo-fascist groups.

It reminds me a lot of Brigid’s Cross. Not quite the same, but close. From what I learned, it’s used to protect things from evil, or specifically, fire.

But while this isn’t entirely a Brigid cross, I wonder if it’s inspired, or a stylized version

I don’t know any known symbolism, but it sort of looks like a cross. I think it was just made by Christians.
