I absolutely dread co-star because of the way they organize charts and other astrology apps seem outdated. The pattern is nice but it isn’t directly advertised as astrological nor does it mention the planets or transits by name. I hear sanctuary is a good one, I haven’t looked into it-

    – what makes an astrology app a good one?
    – why do people prefer to use outdated interfaces like astro dienst ([astro.com](https://astro.com))?
    – what features would be the most useful to have on a mobile app?
    – what do you want out of an astrology app?

Personally I’d just really love a place to store all of my friends’ charts in one place so I can refer back to them and I can stop asking them their birth information all the time lol.

I’d really love to create a useful modern astrology tool for everyone. I have a UI/UX and programming background- I want to pour my heart into making this tool and have the community involved every step of the way if anyone is interested I’d love to hear your thoughts

I’ll just respond to “outdated interfaces” like astrodienst/astro.com. We use it because it is the most reliable and accurate astrology chart source and has been for years. And the creator/owner has kept it free *for decades.* There’s been a lot of volunteer work that has gone into it. It has an amazing array of charting options (you won’t find any paid app that even comes close to matching it). And is what most pro astrologers will use, until they can afford, or choose to purchase the $360 Solar Fire program. And many pros never see a reason to purchase Solar Fire (or some other full program) because of the fullness of what astrodienst provides for free. Yes, it would be nice to have a slick modern interface. But that costs a lot of money. I’ll take accuracy and solid reliability over looks any day.

*Just a random appearance tip: at* *astro.com**, on the extended chart selection page, if you select “Anglo with zodiac” under the “Chart drawing style” drop down menu, it is a cleaner, better chart than their default. And, you can set it as your own default.*

For the record, astrodienst offers their files for free to anyone who wants to create a program/app. They do require that you keep your program or app also free. If you want to monetize it, then there is a commercial licensing fee you’d need to pay. Keep me posted if you choose to create something. I have links to the files you’d need, if you want them (you’ll need more than what astrodienst provides.)

I’ve yet to see a really good/modern interface/chart style that doesn’t really botch the astrology. So yes, sure would be nice to have both. But in the meantime, I’ll happily take accuracy over beauty.

[Astro-Seek.com](https://Astro-Seek.com) is another good, reliable source. Those are the only two, plus the Astro Gold app that I use. Though I really only use Astro Gold as a convenience on my phone and for certain other kinds of tasks that require an ability to animate the chart forward/backward.

I highly recommend Time Passages for iPhone. I use it to store my friends and families chart and enjoy the way the app works. It’s not as pretty as co-star, yet is much more useful.

I would absolutely love to be able to look at progressed transits on an app.

sanctuary is nice if you don’t know where to start and it keeps you updated on the current transits. my problem with it is how shallow it is so I read my horoscope there just for fun.
I personally really like the pattern! it’s the best I’ve ever downloaded. they don’t specify what astrological datas they use but at least it’s interesting.
I’ve had many other apps but after one time I never went back to any of them it was really shallow and uninteresting.
Great improvements imo would include current transits explained, how they affect us based on our birth charts, good synastry explanations (the ones I read where either messy or again very shallow) and “lessons” on astrology. I would be willing to pay if the app was extremely good!

i feel there’s space for an app between costar and something like time passages. i like the artsy/more poetic stuff from costar but it can be a little vague. time passages can be a little dry. haven’t tried sanctuary although i listen to their daily podcasts nor pattern.

The pattern needs to show what damn aspects they’re referring to!!!! So annoying l. A good way to learn too

A particular feature that is a must for me is setting up alerts based on specific timings. Like when the moon is in my Sun sign. Worthless without that.

It has been difficult and costly to find that feature on any Apple apps (free android apps had it). I gave up the search after I got burned. I’m no longer willing to pay for an app to see if this feature exists. I lost 5 bucks on a very popular “full featured” astrology app. They refused to refund my money within about 5 minutes of purchase. Denied the appeal as well. Apple App Store is theft in so many ways, but I digress…

An “astrology app” is too broad a term anyway. Personally, I have no use using astrology for divination (horoscopes). I need it for the timing of rituals and so do many others, but nowhere near the number of people who simply like a pretty interface with horoscopes. Then again…why would anyone want to make yet another one of those?

If you can incorporate the ability to alert the user of certain astrological events including the event mentioned above, you’d have a one of a kind app at least in Apple’s app store. Not so much on Android.

I love astroseek webpage. They have everything you need. From charts to ephemeris and transits. I wish they had an app.

Personally I find I enjoy costar for its ease of access and the whole ability to add and view your friends & compatibility day-by-day is useful.

That’s exactly what I look for in an astrology app:

    – Clean UI
    – Daily interpretations/insights
    – Compatibility information
    – Information to deepen and further astrological understanding

I barely even consider myself an amateur when it comes to astrology, more of a believer than a student, which is why costar appeals to me because I’m not able to draw my own conclusions or understandings of the system (as one may be able to do with Tarot, for example) and its clear they’ve put a lot of work into their AI system.

Hopefully this doesn’t read as a complete poo-pooing of your idea. Modernised versions of charting sites would be useful to many I’m sure but I know it wouldn’t be for me unless it was some sort of gamified tool to teach astrology to a newbie.

One last thing – write down your friends birth info so you don’t have to ask them twice! 😉
