This is a weird sounding question, I know, but please bear with me here.
While I don’t have a great relationship with my mother, I chose to tell her I was exploring tarot so we had some kind of common ground to discuss instead of family drama. It’s gone way better than I expected, for the first time she is being much more accepting of my autonomy, so I’m rolling with it. She was taught what I can only describe as “the old school way”. She spent a LOT of time with a mentor who taught her how to read based almost entirely off of intuition and opening herself empathetically to her querent to pull information, only lightly taking into consideration what the cards traditionally mean.

Does this style sound familiar to any of you? Are there any resources you can point me towards to learn more about it? Books, online communities, etc. My mom is not in a place where she can teach me (nor do I want her as a mentor) but I do feel drawn to this style of reading and would like to understand it better and explore it a bit. I’m honestly still an absolute noob – but my nerd side is insisting I dig further.
It would be great to find a local community for this kind of thing but I’m not sure I should be pursuing that until the pandemic has gotten under control. That being said, if anyone knows of welcoming communities in Chicago, I’d be open to checking them out as well. Thanks!

I think Little Red Tarot has a course with a focus on intuitive reading you may want to look into as a starting point.

However, if it is using your intuition perhaps spending time with your cards is a better use of your time. Look at them. What do you see? What details, colours, and overall picture is there? What does that make you feel? How do you think those things might relate back to your own life? Keep a tarot journal where you make recordings of how the cards present themselves to you to start to make your own guidebook for how to read each one.

What you describe is not really ‘Old School’ as the traditional method was to learn the symbolism as taught through one of the traditions. Intuition is fabulous and I would never discount it’s value. But, intuition can be spotty, unpredictable and inconsistent. That is why I believe it’s important to have a firm grasp on the traditional meanings of the symbolism as intended by the creator of the deck.

The traditional meanings of the cards is the opening salvo of the discussion with the querent. Knowing that the reading is primarily Major Arcana, or Wands or sevens is how I know the general tone of the conversation. At that point, intuition guides the reading.

I have heard that there are those who read solely on intuition. I have seen varied results from those readings. I like to get readings from other readers because how they do it informs my practice and I have had many readings in a wide variety of venues. My personal observation is that readings based solely on intuition are pretty hit or miss.

Studying tradition doesn’t negate intuitive readings but informs them. Not studying the traditions can IMO negatively impact the efficacy of an intuitive reading. So… where’s the harm?

You might like Mary Greer’s 21 Ways to Read a Tarot Card book. It’s a more intuitive reading style.

This is how I read cards. I just learned through practicing. I did a bunch of free readings on here to get accustomed to listening to my gut on these things and getting a base understanding of the cards. Now I feel very confident in my tarot reading abilities and I’m finding it easier and easier to tune into the querent even when they aren’t in front of me. If you ever want to practice or learn more about my method, shoot me a message
