Forums Forums Tarot Reading upright cards with reversal meanings

I don’t typically read reversals because I’m barely comfortable reading upright cards. I can read them individually but can’t read them together.

However, this spread I’m attempting has multiple groups of three for various aspects of my life. All the cards are upright, but I’m feeling drawn to the reversal readings of some of the cards.

Is that something I should pursue, or should I stick with the upright meanings of the cards? I know not everyone believes in reversals, and I’m not sure what my own stance on them is, but sometimes I feel really drawn to the reversal readings when they’re upright.

(Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m still learning and can get a bit overwhelmed.)

    \*\*Edit for clarity\*\*

I’m not looking for why I should read reversals. I’m trying to figure out if it’s okay to read an upright card with its “reversed” meaning.

I’ve never done that, I would say if you feel called to then you should do it, but I also think it could be a little confusing. Do you have a reason to want to read them reversed or is it just a feeling?
Cause I think specially since some cards in reversed can be more negative, it could change the meaning of the reading to something it may not be, if that makes sense?
You can also always pull another card for clarification if anything is confusing too.
Hmm and this is like, just my two cents, but I feel like on bigger/longer readings it can be useful to read reversals as you’ll use a bigger amount of cards, the meanings of them upright may not be enough in a way, y’know?

**Looks like you’ve mentioned reversals! Reversals are a reoccurring topic here and are [explained in our FAQ](**

Reversals are cards that are dealt upside down in a reading. Some people choose to read these cards differently than if they were dealt right side up. This is completely optional – everyone’s tarot technique is different. Some people find reversals bring more depth to a reading, while others find that they obscure or muddle interpretation.

A reversed card can be read multiple ways; it can be interpreted as the opposite of the card’s upright meaning, or that the card’s upright meaning is somehow blocked, concealed, ignored or delayed. It can also be read as an indication that the “action” of the card is happening – or needs to happen – internally.

Are you creating the spread yourself?

I do spreads where one of the spots is “challenge” for example so I read it as if it is reversed (eg blocked, slowed down, directed inward, etc).

I shuffle in a way where I don’t try to have reversed cards so when it does happen it’s very clear it’s to be read in reverse—so usually when a card is upright in that challenge position I read it as if it is “reversed”.

I know many readers who do this and call it intuitive reading… so it doesnt matter how the card came out, they read it how their gut tells them to. Tarot is so personal. Do whatever feels right to you!

I believe the upright or reversed meaning can come thru, and be in one position or the other. Ya know, however you feel drawn.
