After much thinking and discussion, the mod team has decided to make an adjustment to our rule concerning artwork. We know this is one of the most contentious topics on the sub and hope the change will be helpful for everyone involved.

Artwork will now be permitted only once per month per user. The previous rule was once a week. While we strive to provide a place for lovers of tarot to share their tarot-related imagery, this is not meant to be a repository for pictures. We strive to provide a place for discussion – whether that be from newer users learning more about tarot or seasoned veterans sharing their insight. There are plenty of other places on the internet to look at pictures.

To all those artists who push the limits of the rules without participating in any other way: this simply is not the place to promote your name, your brand, your idea, your artwork, your clothing, your paintings, your cards, or anything else. It does not matter if you have not printed the deck. If you have posted a new card from it every week, you have been promoting. Anyone who now posts artwork from their deck (or any other product, digital or otherwise) every month will have their posts removed and runs the risk of a ban. The promotional megathread exists for promotional content.

Users who wish to look at tarot artwork and are not interested in conversation are welcome to check out /r/tarot_art , a new sub. We are not affiliated with this sub, other than inspiring users who run afoul of our rules to make their own sub, but we do hope it helps fill the void.

The bottom line is that we will always put the needs of the sub above the needs of individual users. Any time we have sought feedback about the sub, the volume of art posts is brought up. We hope shortening the time frame available for these posts will help, but are always open to other ideas and suggestions. We want the sub to continue to grow and be a wonderful resource for learning.

I believe this is directed to me so I want to apologize for posting my art in this sub. I’m just an art hobbyist and not a reader, I love the images on tarot decks that I decide it will be a great subject for me to draw back in around 2017. Since then I’ve created several art of my interpretations for the tarot designs.

I’m not here to promote but I’m aware it comes off as that. I should’ve not replied to comments asking about possibility of crowdfunding or publishing. I don’t even plan to anyway, I just want to create my own deck for my personal use. Maybe the most I’ll do will be to sell art prints in a local art convention. The good feedback of others is what gave me the idea that maybe I can sell a deck for others. And I know this now sounds like promotion so I’m very sorry for that.

I also received mixed reactions and messages. Some hate mail was there too. I’m sorry if my interpretations are not what is canon for the tradition of divination. Again, my original goal was just to create my own version of a deck for me. So if I try to make it pretty or beautiful it is just for the art. Also I’m sorry to those that hated the missing arms.

Let me know if I need to remove the posts I created or just remove them if it violates the rules.

Lastly, thanks for the linking of the new sub specific for tarot art and thanks to everyone in this community. So sorry for the art spam. ????

Great limit the art posts so we can have more “New to tarot can I buy my own deck?” posts. And we simply wouldn’t have room for valuable discussions like “DAE Reversals?” if we let people post their art.

Yeah that’s fair. This sub has never really been a friendly and welcoming or lenient place for artists anyway, guess I’ll go somewhere else…

Art is inseparable from tarot. This is a step towards silencing people process the tarot visually and express tarot visually.

Less about art posts but about this sub in general being “a resource for learning”, Reddit is a platform primarily built for a constant stream of content consumption rather than any accumulation of knowledge that is accessible, often any in-depth discussion/knowledge/answer is quickly washed away by newer and newer posts of similar questions. That is the nature of Reddit, one single stream of consciousness with the memory of a goldfish. A traditional forum with multiple sub-forums with clear defined areas of knowledge would be a much better place for knowledge accumulation, because people can actually navigate to find what they need rather than making a new post asking the same types of questions again and again. To merge topics into megathreads is one way to mimic this but it is but a way to force Reddit to work against its design.

I think unless mods are willing to enforce a rule to force people use the search function before posting, there won’t be a real accumulation of knowledge beyond the very top first few pages. You want any knowledge at all to meaningfully exist more than a few days.

That means “can I buy my own deck” posts will not be allowed. This also means the search box has a real purpose and becomes more important than ever. This will also encourage quality posts because good old knowledge from the past can actually be useful in the long term, and not be forgotten beyond page 3.

Why not just rip off the bandaid and stop art posts in this sub and redirect them to that new sub?
