I’m still pretty new to tarot card reading (practicing off and on for about a year now, though not regularly until recently). For a late Christmas party, one of my friends got me this beautiful deck called Ethereal Visions by Matt Hughes. After cleansing the deck with a bit of sage, going through the cards, and reshuffling it a bunch, I did an interview spread that I’ve used with my first deck and was a bit concerned/confused by what I pulled as it seemed as if the deck and I just weren’t compatible.

(Sorry if the formatting is atrocious, I’m on mobile and tried to fix it as best as I could!)

    [Link to spread used](https://littleredtarot.com/tarot-deck-interview-spread/)

    Cards pulled:

    1. Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic?

Reverse 9 of pentacles (materialism, setbacks, loss, and overindulgence )

Interpretation: Based on the booklet that came with the deck and what I found online, the deck seemed to be very tied to materialism and financial irresponsibility and loss.

    2. What are your strengths as a deck?

Reverse 4 of pentacles (Greed, loss, materialistic, and mistrust)

Interpretation: Again with the reverse pentacle and a theme of materialism and financial irresponsibility. Perhaps trying to prevent me from being materialist or being financially irresponsible, which is a bit odd as I am very careful with my finances.

    3. What are your limits as a deck?

Strength (Inner calm, courage, control, patience)

Interpretation: Perhaps the deck doesn’t have much patience for certain things or has a hard time keeping control. (Would make sense as there were multiple times when a card would just pop out or I would be grabbing one and another would come out instead).

    4. What are you here to teach me?

Knight of pentacles (Prepared, efficient, ambitious, practical )

Interpretation: Tying back to the pentacles from the first two question as this seems to be a reoccurring theme, it seems the deck is really wanting to teach me to be prepared for financial needs and making sure I don’t live above my income.

    5. How can I best learn and collaborate with you?

Reverse Death (resistance, stagnation, immobility, obsession)

Interpretation: This is where I am a confused as well as I was very excited to work with this new beautiful deck, but there seems to be an issue as all I can really interpret this as is resistance to change and our relationship not going forward.

    6. What is the potential outcome of our working relationship?

Five of wands (Conflict, disagreement, resistance, competition)

Interpretation: Drawing from my previous question’s answer as well, it just seems as if our relationship together won’t move forward and will result in lots of conflict and clashing.

I’m definitely planning on trying this reading again later on as I would like to try and see if maybe I just haven’t cleansed and charged the deck enough or maybe it was just angry for some reason, but I would definitely love some feedback on what I got from the readings as I am still learning and trying to piece everything together into one cohesive reading.

I think you are right about doing a follow up interview with it after some more cleansing/attuning with it.

To me, it feels like the deck is telling you that it will be a great deck for you when you need hard, unsentimental advice about what you’re doing wrong in financial and the more materialistic parts of your life. Question five also makes me thing it wants you to push back on what it’s telling you (trust but verify, maybe?).

Overall, it seems like a deck that could be useful to you in certain circumstances when used in the way it’s telling you, but probably isn’t a general use deck for you.
