Hey guys! I’m a newbie to tarot cards and I’m getting my very first deck soon! I was wondering if y’all could share your own experience with your tarot card collection; like how many decks you have and what you use each deck for specifically? I heard that sometimes your deck just needs a break when it’s overused and that’s why most people own multiple decks, so I’m curious about your experience with this.

I have more decks than I can count. If I did count them I think it would be embarrassing and I’m not ready to face that reality and admit I have a problem.

I have NEVER had a deck “wear out” and I’ve used some for over 20 years. What wears out is the reader’s ability or capacity to interpret the symbolism on the cards.

Some assign anthropomorphic qualities to their decks. I find that in most cases that is indicative of a passive approach to the craft. There is the implication that the deck is doing the work and if it doesn’t go well it’s therefore the fault of the deck in some way.

I prefer a more professional approach. I view this as a craft that needs to be learned, practiced and developed. I have multiple decks because every new deck I buy increases my knowledge and widens my perspective.

Try searching in the sidebar! This has been asked and answered ad nauseam here.

The sub also has [a huge wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/tarot/wiki/index) that can answer most beginner questions about tips and tricks, rituals, superstitions, and resources for getting started. Good luck!

I really don’t know how many decks I own at this point. A lot. Dozens. I’ve been reading/collecting for about 30 years. I have a credenza full on display in the living room and then a number sealed in their original packaging in a separate part of the house that I’ve been lugging around for a long time.

I’m probably in the minority in that I don’t believe decks get “tired” or emotional, or depleted or have any magical traits of their own. I think they have character in the sense….that a painting has character. When you’ve loved a toy, or a book, or a piece of furniture so long that you become very attached to it, and come to think of it as having a certain presence…..that’s how I think of individual decks.

They’ve traveled with me, I’ve consulted with them during the highs and lows of my life, and I would be genuinely sad if they were damaged or lost or ruined (which has happened)….but they are just tools made out of paper and I don’t believe they can get tired or put out with me or become menacing or lose their ability to read.

    started tarot 1/2 year ago..

I have 9 decks so far.. going to collect more because I just love the art for some of them.

I use a regular rider waite to practice because that’s like the go to for beginner’s I believe. Also I use that deck when I am practicing reading for others.

then I have a deck I use exclusively for myself for more spiritual type question and I don’t use that deck for mundane questions. just how I like to approach it. there isn’t a rule or anything like that it’s really up to you.

then the other various deck I pick and choose depending on my mood. I think in terms of physical wear and tear, it depends on how you shuffle ur deck. I tend to shuffle lightly for decks that are more costly.. and for the regular rider waite, I riffle shuffle the heck out of it. lol. but for rare decks or costly decks you won’t want to do that. is probably better if you overhand shuffle for those.

I’ve accumulated a number of decks for a long time and suffice to say I have an excel file just to not forget. I shuffle my decks twice a week just like I shuffle my cards. Practicing with different types of artwork (I’m a sucker for aesthetics) and styles just to see the difference of each reading. Some decks have better symbolism than others while some have a minimalist style to it. So it works differently with every reading. And it just fascinates me how you have two tarot decks but may have varying interpretations for the same card just because of the visuals.

That being said it’s not the number of decks that make a good reading (although it helps for me). You may have a lot of decks but may still struggle on how tarot works but on the other hand you may have just one or two and master its meaning and interpretations effortlessly.

Anyway, cards are just cards. Like others said, it all attributes to the reader’s mastery. It’s still your energy , intention and intuition that makes meaning to the reading.

Take a break if you see the cards with a bunch of clouds on your head. You don’t have to force yourself to read daily but don’t have too much of a gap and forget.
