Glad to see it wasn’t always “skinny better”. But I guess any look can be held up as perfect and you suck if you’re not it

I look like the one on the right on my best days. I scrolled down with fear of a body shaming ad. Then it was. 😭

I had an antique tin I used to keep my er… herbs in back in the day. It was a brand tin for pills called: Ivona Flesh Builder from the early 1930s the leaflet inside assured that through taking the pills you could gain two stone in a week. Always wondered what was in those pills.

And yet the amount of bullying and people screaming and laughing at me for being bigger is today’s norm. Why does it matter what MY body looks like, don’t they know I struggle enough with how I look, I Hate myself too, you don’t have to tell me I’m not good enough.

People need to stop commenting on other’s bodies, it’s not productive and it doesn’t help, it’s just mean. Let people be whatever size they are. Because you don’t know what they’re going through.

I saw a tweet years ago that said something along the lines of “Every time one of these ads makes you feel bad about yourself so you buy the product, you’re making some rich old dude even richer.”

I buy my share of health and beauty products and I’m not shaming anyone who wants to buy this type of stuff, but just keep in mind that’s it’s all marketing designed to get us to buy things. Companies create a problem/need (ugh, I’m hideous, I’m too thin/fat) then offer us a “solution” in the form of their product. Don’t let some rich, old fuck make you feel ashamed of the way you look.

This ad reminds me of my mom. My mom complained that when she was a teen she got called Olive Oil because she was so skinny! (note we are black).

She also complains her legs are too skinny and she refused to wear anything where her calves were on display. She always wore longer skirts with mid-calf boots. Or pants.

I have seen pics of my mom when she was younger and she is slim like Lupita N’yongo. So basically societal ideal! She hated it. She wanted to be “thicker” like the woman on the right.

My sister and I missed those slim jeans and we are in the 12-18 US range depending on weight fluctuations.

Growing up, when I wore shorts or knee length skirts – my mom would always say “you have big legs (calves) so you can wear these items.” And she hates skinny calves with a passion.

I do feel like I have such a weird sense of body image related to my mom’s insecurities and the comments she would make about other women. She has very specific rules on how women should present themselves, and of course be shaped or sized. She rarely makes comments about size – as long as folks are appropriately “covered” – things like bare midriffs are a no go for her for people of any size. And always would call out well dressed plus sized women.

As she got older her weight fluctuated a bit. But she mainly floated around a size 8-10 or so US – with her “skinny” calves. But in the past year she has been dealing with health issues and has lost ~40 pounds. She is really really small now and she hates it. She misses her old shape and frame. She wants to gain back at least 20 of those pounds to fill back in.

During times of hardship larger women become a lot more attractive. Especially when they have a naturally strong build. I mean think about it. If there’s a food shortage or if you have to till fields all day everyday some skinny undernourished human would be the first to break down, while strong, well rounded people have reservers and the strength for hard work.

Dudes have it too easy to appreciate sturdiness rn.

Regardless of that the important beauty standard should be the mind. And if you need to be physically attached, be physically attracted to health. Some people have their best body shape when they’re thin, other when they’re a bit curvy. Depends on that specific person’s body. We should finally start embracing individuality instead of trying to generalize everything all the time.
