My great grandparents fell in love because she stabbed him with her hat pin.

She came over from Holland with just her little brother, and they made a small life for themselves. She worked at a factory where my great grandfather was the foreman, and when he found out she was pretty much by herself with a child to care for, he was worried about her and would follow her home at a distance to make sure she got home safely (seems a little sketch, I know, but he was genuine, and it was the aughts of the 1900s). One day, she got that prickle on the back of her neck and figured out she was being followed, though she didn’t know by whom. She ducked around a corner and waited to ambush her stalker, and ended up stabbing him in the shoulder. He admitted that he’d been following her, and they lived happily ever after

I’ve been thinking about dressing in drag ever since right wing politicians made it clear they are scared of it, and as a historical martial arts enthusiast I was thinking of including this and a whole bunch of other articles of clothing used for self defense.

Like, a Victorian era or steampunk dress that’s more kitted out than James Bond’s car. Women’s self defense in the late 18 and early 1900s is a truly fascinating subject.

I knew this would be cool! I mean, the top pin looks like an ornately detailed rapier!

Hatpins are cool, but a stiletto dagger is even more fashionable and leaves a longer-lasting impact on ill-behaved strangers.

I would love to wear a morally questionable hat, along with a glorious lethal hatpin. I will embrace being labelled a petticoated swashbuckler

This was the whole point of Korean hair pins throughout history. But of course women were clever enough to call it fashion and status symbols rather than self defense and to threaten to commit suicide if men tried to coerce and blackmail them into submission.
