I was greeted by a woman
so strange
Her first words to me were
Alley behind memory lane.

‘Tis was a secret affair
A soiree of sorts,
Where our eyes had met
And she glided over to talk.

She asked me to wait
And talk to no one
Be there by nightfall
Alone or not at all.

She spoke fondly of witches
And dark creatures summoned
to bring back to life
Those at the doorstep of death.

She warned me of a surreptitious smile
And a glorious glance
Known to ensnare the mind
And leave nothing to chance.

I did what she asked
For she promised me a chest
Not of material riches
But for a mind at rest.
