I’m going to preface this post with me iterating that this post is NOT telling people how they should practice or what they do with their lives. However….

Being a witchy shop owner is not the end-all-be-all of being a practitioner. If that’s something you want to aspire to, GREAT! Go for it! But I have noticed a disturbing trend of people that are just starting out already selling readings, or opening Etsy shops, etc. People are treating it as an “easy job” or get-rich-quick scheme, then get frustrated when they can’t survive on their own with it.

I’m sad to say it but we are either already in a recession, or entering one. And the businesses that will be hit the hardest are the small ones as people cut out frivolous spending in order to better afford groceries. It would be more beneficial to you to use your magick to get ahead while living IN the system.

Use it to land jobs instead of trying to use it as your job. Magick is a tool! Also… If you just think about it… If EVERY practitioner opens a shop, sells readings, and what not, then the market will be FLOODED with that (it already is), and none of y’all will be successful lol.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I personally use my magick to land jobs in an extremely competitive, nepotism-based field where I had no contacts whatsoever coming in. As well as the usual kinds of spells to protect myself and my family, keep spirits out, divine for myself, etc… But my magick works for me. I don’t try to be a “professional practitioner” because, as I see it, I’m a hell of a lot more successful than they are with the way I use my magick to make my life easier, rather than trying to live off it to live out my own personal fantasy of being a full-time sorcerer.

Listen to me or don’t listen to me; do what you want! All I’m saying is there are other ways to live as a practitioner than JUST the shop one, and it doesn’t make you any less of a witch/warlock/sorcerer(ess)/whatever. In fact, you may find yourself having MORE time to really delve deep into the research and theories you are interested in and have found.

And the amount of people selling ritual candles that have entire stalks of plants and herbs in them…y’all are asking to be sued for that fire hazard nonsense lol.

As a side note, there are also a ton more actual scams these days. Every goddamn good tarot reader out there has like 10 impersonator accounts that message you saying you have a dark aura about you, are cursed etc and you need to pay them $50 to get rid of that curse for you. But they’re not even the person in their profile, they downloaded another persons photos and posts and bought some followers to look somewhat legitimate.

A witchy market near me that usually hosts events had an impersonator that reached out to potential vendors, took a fee, had a bunch of people show up to their location and be livid when there was no event that day.

People are getting desperate out there. Social media is easy to lie on. Be careful. Ignore anyone that solicits you or reaches out to you first. Or at least do a lot of research and validate their identity.

i think this is a trend because of the recession, not in spite of it. people are out of work and looking for side hustles.

I dream of owning my own shop one day but I mostly think of it as a retirement plan. I want to spend my crone years selling herbs, crystals and other tools while I give tarot readings and reiki treatments.

I work in a magic shop. People think it’s a fun gig, it’s easy and whimsical and oh so magical, and we get a lot of people who want to work for us because of how they think it will be.

In reality, it’s retail. I spend a lot of my day restocking things, doing inventory, making active sales and interacting with customers, and cleaning. It’s not a bad retail job, but I could certainly make more money and have more benefits in another job.

All the downsides of retail? You have to deal with those. The customers are, admittedly, less rude than other shops I’ve worked for, but they sometimes are weirder, or are in a very, very sad part of their lives.

Honestly, don’t make your spiritual practice into a business. You’re better off making things for yourself and your friends and family.

Thank you for this. People get a pendulum or a book on witchcraft and they’re selling readings. It’s too saturated and mostly very new witches advertising.

Even as someone who does do spells and reading on requests, my first advice is always “have you tried doing the magic yourself?” There’s such a low barrier of entry for such a splendid experience, but a lot of people seem to have genuinely never thought of picking up the book and doing it themselves. 9 times out of 10 whenever someone asks me for a spell or reading, they leave with the book recommendations and advice to do it themselves.

The only readings I do are by word of mouth, and most people generally come to me when they want a reading.
    Completely agree with this post.

Yikes… I can’t even begin thinking about reading for others at the moment. I seem to do well reading for myself but I’m certainly not practiced enough to even give free readings let alone trying to charge for it!

I give free readings to my friends and co-workers, but direct them to a much more experienced local practitioner if they want more clarification than I can give. I feel like I have to help people, perhaps to atone for a past life. However, I don’t see a problem with making some money off of a gift. The market is flooded, though.

Unfortunately for me I’m not cut put for regular jobs. Signed off on by my therapist, a psychologist and the government.

Luckily I have disability, but my partners income is a necessity for survival and his job is fixing boats which will probably take a huge his since it already took a size able one last year.

Soo I have to at least try something of my own. It probably won’t be witchy stuff.. but I may incorporate it in time. But it creative stuff because that’s what I’m good at. Have to make sure our little family of 4 will be ok.
