I’ve been doing a lot of inner work recently and reflecting on various things like the nature of the inner child, emotional needs and inner pain in the context of placements/aspects. Often connecting such things with Chiron, hard aspects or the moon or whatever, but I’m never satisfied with the explanations of the shadow in astrology. Despite the shadow, concepts like the ego and persona or even the anima/animus seem to be pretty easy to characterize in astrology. I’ve heard some say the shadow is just the negative traits of certain placements but that doesn’t feel like the whole story naturally, and after doing my own shadow work I find it even harder to see it. Anyway, what’s y’all’s thoughts on this?

    -natal descendant

    -natal 7th house planets

    -natal Mars, Saturn & Pluto

-any planets in the sign of their detriment or fall

-any unaspected planets in the natal chart (using maximum 5 degree orbs)

(this is the official listing used by Edwin C. Steinbrecher, who used Jungian psychology to determine his “spiritual technology” system and meditations)

I‘m a professional astrologer with a psychology degree specializing in Jungian astrology. Some good answers here! The psyche’s shadow can be found many places in the natal chart just as it can show up in many ways in our lives. The South Node can tell us quite a bit, 4H/8H/12H, Chiron, the descendant, unaspected planets especially in those houses, any prominent oppositions, T-squares (where balance is clearly needed), etc. It depends on the individual. There are a lot of different possibilities. For myself, I found that a lot of my shadow issues were related to a stellium I have of all personal planets that’s part of a Grand Trine. I was very uncomfortable with this energy when I was younger, tried to channel it a certain way for a long time but eventually just blocked it off. When I allowed myself to embody ALL of my placements I began to feel whole. Not coincidentally, I spent a lot of time during my first Saturn Return doing shadow work with a Jungian analyst + astrologer. It was a very positive experience for me, like coming home to myself. Happy to recommend some Jungian astrology books if anyone is interested- any and everything by Liz Greene, to start.

    Interesting thought thread.
For me personally, I’ve done shadow work also, hence my attraction to shadow in viewing charts, but not familiar yet with jungs astrology (in the pipeline) but from my own experience with my chart and even looking at my children’s, I like to view moon placement (pre-birth, to 9degrees and post birth 12-14degrees) any exact or 1degree orb aspects, and even looking at (mothers chart) during pregnancy gestation aspects.
I’ve always felt like neptune ♆ energy could signify amniotic fluid, hence the moon-mother- neptune/collective depth style of womb for the growing baby.
Perhaps the combination of baby absorbing the external world (albeit safe n secure within mothers womb) could have some kind of undercurrent for theme of shadow as child progresses in life.
It’s all nature/nurture post birth obviously, but Because I often think about things like”what tone was set as we entered,(all subconscious) alongside the light (consciousness) of birth, ive always felt drawn to the info that may possibly bridge that gap.
(Shadow) progression of existence from dark(pre-birth) cocoon of transformation (gestation) to birth (light)
Then again, individually I’m all about the bridging in and of life- so just my own thought interpretation .
Great question though, thanks 4 asking it, keen to hear thoughts on your question. 🙏

The Moon, South Node, Chiron, 12th & 8th House all speak to our subconscious. However I do tend to resonate with the idea that there is a light/shadow yin/yang aspect to every placement and aspect.

Out of all the houses in astrology, the 8th and 12th seem to be the most linked to the darker aspects of life and one’s personality respectively, although I think there’s a connection to the fourth house, that is considerably relevant…

The 4th house’s associations with one’s roots, family, subconscious patterns, childhood or mental/and/or emotional foundations, seem very relevant when examining one’s Shadow in conjunction with astrology. Looking closer into your childhood, personal foundations and upbringing could shed some light on some the dimensions of the shadow.

Diving into the houses you have a stellium in, your moon, Chiron and Pluto respectively could be helpful and add some perspective in this area.

Do share any of your findings 🙂

8th, 12th, maybe even 4th. The shadow is the home to unwanted or denied instincts, so lust for power and control, deception and disdain (saturn, especially out of domicile), as well as rage, hatred, love of conflict, polarization, and argument (mars) will be key especially if unaspected.

Why unaspected? Because without aspects, it’s more hidden, less conscious.

Finally, I would look at hard aspects to the luminaries and maybe mercury/venus.
