Why are we tied to our ancestors?

Hi, I’ve been going to a few mediums over the past few weeks and it seems that grandparents and even great grandparents that I never met in my lifetime, seem to be looking out for me. Why is that? What if I didn’t really have a good connection with a certain family before they passed, why are they lingering? To me it doesn’t make any sense at all.
