Do you guys ever pick up on a pattern of negativity coming from a deck? I hadn’t done any readings for a couple of weeks and ever since I started again it seems like I get some pessimistic readings, even if I’m doing readings for a friend.
Any way of sorting this out?

Which book/website are you using for your card meanings? I find certain books can have more negative meanings behind each card. What I did is consult several different books and websites for each card meaning, then compiled them together. This often gives multiple perspectives when reading a card.

I remember I was pulling the 3 of swords (not good vibes!) for many, many weeks and it really bothered me. My advice is to put that deck away and use another one, if possible. If not, try to seek more positive or even neutral meanings for cards that are giving you negative vibes. Tarot is never one-sided. There are always alternate layers to explore.

No card is wholly positive or negative. It could be a matter of the interpretations you’re finding, or the lens you’re viewing them through. That being said, if a deck starts to get sassy with me it usually means I’m not listening, or I need to switch to a different deck for a bit.

Sometimes we need to look into the shadow. If you keep turning away from it, it only gets bigger and stronger.

I think it’s really important to check our attitude when reading. This morning I got all reversals (which, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think necessarily equates to negativity) except for the 9 of swords. But my attitude was shit. So I need to figure out how to work through that.

Alternatively, you might be on the downturn of The Wheel of Fortune, to put it in Tarot terms. Your readings might be negative or pessimistic cuz it’s a rough time. Explore why pessimism is coming through.

Are the cards that are coming up pessimistic, or are you interpreting them in a pessimistic way? Are you trying to predict the future and the cards are suggesting that things won’t go well?

Have you tried cleansing your cards?

Agree with other comments, I have noticed that some tarot sources can be a huge downer. Yeah everything has a positive or negative aspect, but not everything has to be so nasty. I have the Linestrider deck and I found some interpretations to be so wack. One card said “this is karma that you deserve because of your terrible past actions” or something like that and I was like whaaaaa?? Looked up the same card on Biddy Tarot and it had a whole different meaning that resonated more with me. Some resources are just negative. It’s weird. I highly recommend Biddy Tarot, just more options for what the card might mean for you

And the sass is real what the cards. I agree about cleansing (smudging, put them in a bucket of salt, leave on windowsill for sun/moon cleansing) to get past energy out. Sometimes a deck is just like that

Negativity doesn’t come from the deck in my beliefs. Negativity is there and the deck is picking up on it. Whether it is from you, someone in your life or your surroundings, the deck doesn’t create or interject things by itself.

There are NO negative cards in the deck. They are simply expressing energy. We interpret it as negative generally when it goes against what we thought we wanted. The tower tells us that crappy situations are about to fall apart. Is that bad news? Do we want to maintain the illusion that our crappy job, relationship, avocation or situation is really good and we just need to work harder on making it good? No, it’s crap. It’s destined to fall apart.

Tarot provides clarity. Reversed cards are showing us those areas where our clarity has been clouded and needs adjusting. Look for the clarity. Look more deeply into the symbolism and the meaning of the cards. See how removing illusion and wishful thinking is a positive.

I think some decks can be negative because when I watch deck reviews the reviewers might say this is good for shadow work.

    On the other hand

I stopped practincing tarot for a couple of months because I kept reading negatively even if it could have been positive. Since I keep reading pessimistically I decided it was more to do with me and not tarot. But after the break I was good.

I got a Thoth deck years back and felt a lot of bad/weird energy off it. I think I did maybe 2 readings before retiring it.

Ask your deck! Seriously, ask him/her/them/it why they’re being negative or if it’s the hard truth of the matter. Ask if that’s just their personality as a curmudgeonly deck. Deck interviews helps so much. I ask what their name is, what they like to help with—could be your deck doesn’t like answering certain topics—and so on. I have one deck that only likes to talk about business and finance and doesn’t care too much about relationships. Another deck gives me the cold-light-of-morning truth that is hard to swallow. Sure, cleansing is good and I recommend that, but also get to know your deck and just… ask them.
