GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmIn the first Hobbit movie, when Bilbo is settling down to a nice dinner, and the doorbell rings, he makes this face that just speaks to my soul. I know that face, because I have probably made the same one many times in my life.

GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmDarcy is also the literary equivalent of made for the female gaze.
He shows up in P&P as this rich, young, mysterious, attractive asshole. In our first interaction with him at a party, he effectively says within Elizabeth and her sister’s earshot that there are no attractive women at the party. If the book was written by a man, he would have won Elizabeth over with his 18th century equiv of negging, there would have been something about how she saw the better man under the surface and they’d have run off into the sunset together. But instead, literally every women including the overtly gold-digging Mrs. Bennett is put off by his attitude. And Elizabeth clashes with Darcy not over his disrespect toward her at the party, but his disrespect toward all of the women in the room, and his later disrespect to her sister. Because yeah, in an era where married women have very little power, marrying a known asshole is a bad bet to make, no matter how rich he is. And Darcy does not help himself by attempting to “you’re not like other girls” her. But some people stop there and conclude that women want a rich asshole. But what makes Darcy a long-standing literary crush is not the “rich asshole” part. It’s the part where he says “I hear what you’re saying. I was wrong, you were right, I was a pretentious asshole who acted like I was doing you a favor by being interested in you. You clearly do not reciprocate. I will now respectfully leave you alone.”

GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmThere’s a saying in Russia: unannounced guest is worse than a Mongol. (Referring to the Mongolian invasion of ancient Russia.)
I had someone actually try to invite themselves into my home casually (“I’ll cook you dinner at your home”), and I was like..you gonna do WHAT in my kitchen now?! I was seriously horrified and noped out of that date as quickly as I could.
Dude, I won’t even let my mother cook in my kitchen – who do you think you are? AND without an invitation?? 😂😂😂

GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmJane Austen novels are also funny af besides the social critique. Way more than they are romantic imo. Some really savage observations and portrayals in there.
Im always happy to see interpretations that work out these two qualities more than self-unaware sappy romance.

GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmFor some reason I read “Charlotte Brontë” and thought yes to the first one — but when did she complain about visitors?

GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmMy maternal family is fond of unannounced visits. My grandfather did this to my parents when I was an infant, and my mother (his daughter) tore him a new one. So now he refuses to visit.

GuestNovember 20, 2021 at 6:39 pmAbout that second horror: my phone now doesn’t alert on calls from unknown callers.
I don’t mind asynchronous (email, text) contact.
I love missing those calls.
As for the first horror, I have about 30 years of experience in my specialty area, about 40 over all. I ask the tough questions without fear because: what are they going to do, make me keep working there?
