I met a longtime business associate for lunch today. It had been a little over a year since I saw her. We caught up on family, friends, and work. We were sitting outside on the restaurant’s patio talking about work with other tables around us. As I’m in the middle of a sentence I felt two slow taps on my right shoulder from what seemed like a pointer finger. It surprised me and I immediately stopped talking while quickly turning my head to see who it was. It was firm enough to make me think it was a person but done in a nice way as if you’d touch someone you know. I felt my shirt depress and I think she saw it too. I turned back to my colleague and she was visibly scared with the hair on her arms standing up. I mentioned that I thought someone touched me but quickly changed the subject and continued our conversation. This is the first time something like being touched has happened in public. The touching is not normal for me nor is it normal for things to happen around people I don’t live with. Even then, things typically consist of knocks or specific electronic items power cycling in one room only. I’ve been trying to pay attention but I’m not understanding the message if there is one. Today at lunch I felt like the message/attention possibly wasn’t meant for me. I can’t even explain how I know that much. It was an awkward moment where I didn’t know how to help or if I could. I’d like to learn and understand this better.
