So I like doing readings for fun for friends family and strangers. I do it for free since it’s just fun rn. I’ve been reading tarot for about 7 years and they’ve always been great, I’ve gotten amazing feedbacks until today. Today I did a reading for a stranger and it was around a group of people. I read it and the person said it was really accurate and then a couple other people starting saying “that’s so general it applies to me too” and “that’s the most general reading ever”
I don’t know, I just felt pretty bad and I kinda don’t want to do any readings. I’m now wondering if I should just stop readings and maybe I am too general? Idk I just feel pretty bad being told my reading was not good and general. Has someone ever felt this way? I guess I felt like I was being made fun of lol

I think they were just assholes. Like the vibe I’m getting reading this this was a group of casual people just doing this for shits and giggles.

We’re not always gonna get it right or see it the way someone else sees it. That’s what makes our artform so personal and up for interpretation. That’s why I won’t read if I’m in a dark patch, won’t read for casuals or skeptics either. I feel I should have the final say on who I read for and I’m not gonna waste my energy on people who aren’t serious or are looking to find flaw.

Don’t stop reading, especially if you’re having fun and have gotten good results. There are many reasons to do readings semi-privately, and you’ve just experienced one of them: not all observers are respectful. Many people love to be back-seat drivers, Monday morning quarterbacks, etc. A lot of people like to criticize.

If you do your readings away from others, both you and your client will be more relaxed, better able to use your intuition, and more comfortable dealing with emotional topics. There’s a reason psychotherapy is done one-on-one.

Perhaps you can adjust your expectations a little bit?

Bad reviews are what happens when reality doesn’t match up to expectations. A general reading isn’t bad (think of how many people watch Youtube tarot/horoscopes), so if you’re not comfortable making pointed predictions, then tell folks that you’re going to keep it general, and go with that 🙂

I know how that feels all too well, I tried running a small little etsy shop selling readings for basically pennies and it….. was honestly a terrible idea for me. It took me ages to get back in my groove. It threw me off completely for months. All because I didn’t tell people what they wanted to hear in their love readings or whatever.

Which in never doing again. Dont ask me questions about potential relationships or past relationship in not doing it. The end.

It’s a little frustrating, but I imagine you just kinda have to adapt and figure out your own rules.

I’ve gave a free reading for a woman on reddit before who reported me to the mods bc she didn’t like the answer I gave her. Only what she said to the mod was I was falsely advertising what I was offering, so when the mod asked me about it I was blown away. I told her the reading was free and I didn’t even ask for a donation.

Some people just don’t know how to act, or to what extent they can expect a reading can provide them.

Honestly, I think most readings are really general especially when the question isn’t very specific. Like if you ask me “what is the energy around my life right now” and you’re dealing with anxiety and stress, chances are, everyone else in the room is dealing with that too. Maybe that means the reading was too general, maybe it means the question was very general. Maybe it’s both. As long as it’s helpful to the person asking, I think it’s okay. Personally, I think getting very specific reads requires a certain technique or ability that you can build (for example, using a tarot deck and multiple oracle decks, having pretty good intuition naturally).

Hey so I consider myself a semi-professional reader. I busked tarot very heavily for about two years before COVID. I’ve probably read for over 1000 people doing that – not trying to brag at you but just give some context.

Some readings you give people will feel bad. Some people are just straight up not into it. And while you are definitely going to have more of these experiences earlier in your reading career it never totally stops.

Please don’t take this as a sign to stop reading for people if you’re passionate about tarot – I guarantee you if you stick with it you will have plenty of amazing experiences and the bad ones will stop sticking out so much.

In my experience, groups can be tricky and I try to avoid reading in big groups, especially things like bachelorette parties. You know how in “Say yes to the dress”, the bigger the group, the bigger the problems? There’s always one person who is a naysayer, contrarian, or just has to make themselves seem smarter/superior/or make it about themselves. So if someone else is getting attention/compliments, they feel the need to lift themselves above by stomping on others. It’s extremely immature, and it’s not your problem.

Don’t take it personally. They are revealing more about themselves than about you. I would love to get a reading from you!
