I want to learn card readings but tarot seems a bit too complex for me and is a bit much for me to take on right now. I just wanted to know if y’all feel like Oracle cards are on the same level as far as divination goes? Like do they work just as well?

You do what you’re comfortable with and what works for you. Everyone has their own preferences and systems. So yes it is just as valid.

Asking if one form of divination is more valid than another is a bit like asking if apples are tastier than oranges. It’s entirely subjective!

Oracle decks are freaking incredible because you can get one (or more!) that suits you to a T.

Tarot is standard, which is awesome for its own reasons.

But there’s pretty much an oracle deck to cater to whatever vibes/topics you want to explore. And the benefits are very similar to tarot, because life has certain major themes that always come up to be addressed in whatever medium you choose.

There are many types of oracle decks, so it depends. Some oracles (to list an extreme example, Therapets) are meant to be used as single affirmations, or in a unique manner. Others give you more balanced life advice similar to Tarot decks.

The point about oracles is that you need to learn every deck in depth (or use the book forever, which is how I tend to end up). With Tarot, once you’ve learnt the basics, you can use most decks and you only need to learn deck-specific interpretations for a small number of cards, if that.

When you are ready for Tarot, I’d recommend a deck in the RWS tradition with a substantial guidebook, as that makes it easier to learn. (You’ll also go a long way by learning the suits and the numbers: Aces are beginnings, coupled with the four suits, that’s four cards which will make sense to you etc.)

They are different but can be used alone or even with a tarot or instead. Even 2 oracles can be used together. Do this however you like.

I used oracle cards before starting with tarot and I think it’s a great way to start. I also feel it can allow your intuition to really come in to play and it can help you strengthen it as well.

I started with, and still mainly use oracle cards. I was never really drawn to tarot and to be honest it felt like a lot to learn the meanings of so many cards, and there seems to be so much nuance with cards that get pulled together etc etc. It felt very overwhelming.

I think oracle cards are so much easier to work with as you’re learning to read, their meanings are usually very straightforward and I found that an easier way to access my own intuition through them – rather than being wrapped up in what the cards were ‘supposed’ to mean.

Having said all that, after three years of reading oracle, I saw a divine deck in a reading and simply had to buy it… So now I’m learning the tarot 🙂 I got the Light Seer’s Deck, and it attracted me because the illustrations are so evocative – so I find I can read them intuitively and then look up their meaning. I’m really enjoying the process and I LOVE the deck so much. I do feel that tarot has a certain, umm, spiritual weight to it that I don’t feel with the oracle – not sure if that makes sense?

But both are totally valid, and I’m so glad I started with oracle… I imagine that I will use them both in future and I can’t wait to start combining them!

I feel Oracle cards are just as valid and use them more for questions like, “What messages do my guides have for me?” I also use them to wrap up a reading, or in my daily draw along with a tarot card. I feel why’re even more spiritual than tarot.

Oracle cards have different meanings than tarot cards. Each deck is different based on the artist/creator.

Learning the oracle will only teach you how to read intuitively (based on the images of the cards). It will not teach you the meanings of the tarot cards.

That said, one oracle deck may or may not be as broad as a tarot deck. The tarot deck covers almost every single human experience.

It’s apples and oranges. However, for the sake of this discussion I will say that I find that you have to connect on a more personal level with oracle cards for them to be useful whereas with Tarot it can still be useful in a general way even if you don’t feel that connection. I have one oracle deck but I didn’t really “bond” with it too much and it’s not resonating a lot so I will be trying another one I’m drawn to eventually. If you find an oracle deck you work with you can use them along with a tarot deck if you feel so inclined.

I love Oracle decks, I use them a lot alongside tarot in readings. I highly suggest larger ones (40+ cards) with broad meanings in a department you’re interested in 🙂

    I’d recommend looking into Lenormand because it’s a somewhat widespread oracle system. There are only 36 cards and it’s really straightforward. You don’t even need to buy a new deck to start out. There are some free printable decks online or, since there are playing card associations you can make your own with playing cards. Also, if you ever do want to get into Tarot, there’s a book on using both systems together {{Cartomancy with the Lenormand and the Tarot by Patrick Dunn}}
