GuestFebruary 7, 2021 at 5:29 pmNew account, old lurker here 🙂 I’m really excited to share some of the art* from an ecology-based oracle deck I am working on. It’s called Glowwood. The deck consists of 78 key allies/beings from the forest — plants, insects, fungi, lichens, minerals — enmeshed in webs of real, dynamic relationships. Spreads are landscapes, which we read by looking at properties of individual cards and at the ecological relationships between the cards.
One feature I am particularly excited about are the border symbols. They are a shorthand for each being’s essential traits and interactions with other cards. So, for example, the Plantain has the symbols Medicine (represented by the mandrake); Community (represented by a web in a circle); and Builder (represented by a stack of rocks). These reflect some of the Plantain’s biological traits: its ability to disinfect wounds, its role as nourisher of moth and butterfly caterpillars; its capacity to break up compacted soils and establish new ground for others to follow.
The 78 allies were selected based on their ecological significance, and occasionally based on their beauty or particularly interesting traits 🙂 I aimed to strike a balance between common and unusual species found in the forest.
Are you into ecomagick? Excited to know what you think about this kind of deck <3
P.S. I hope this is OK to post here — this project has an [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/glowwoodcards/) (where I also share some foraging and IRL forest content).
* Line art was created using Affinity Designer on an iPad pro (a vector editor). Colored with Adobe Illustrator. I’m more than happy to talk about process with anyone interested!
