Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what does your experience of the Rider Waite Smith deck and the Thoth tells you about each of them ? Do you find that one is better for spiritual type of readings whilst the other is better for the day to day life things or such doesn’t apply ? I’ve been learning the Rider deck for a couple of months and pretty much always can get a significant message out of the readings. Now that I’m learning a bit of the Thoth and using it i can’t get anything. Maybe I’m using it for the wrong questions?

It could be that you’re more familiar with Waite-Smith than Crowley-Harris. When it comes to meaningful messages, I’ve never had the Waite-Smith fail me.

have you read lon milo duquettes book on the thoth deck? the symbolism in that one is pretty deep and it definitely requires some study to get familiar with but it’s a great deck

I think this is mostly the process of learning to work with a new deck and learn it’s symbology, etc. That being said, I do have some decks that I only use for certain types of questions/practices. When reading for clients I can often tell what the substance of the reading is going to be based on the decks they choose for their reaidng (I read with multiple decks, and they may choose up to three).

I’ve felt surprisingly limited by the Thoth deck, but am opening more to it since starting to learn more about the Marseilles deck, which could be considered an ancestor of both. Thoth and Rider-Waite are contemporaries of one another, I believe. Two sides of the same coin, but I think for everyday readings Thoth is more demanding of its reader, more esoteric. Rider-Waite is designed to be clear.
