I’m somewhat of a newbie (I’ve been practicing for about a year) and I’ve never had a need to know this. Can I use normal tap water for spells or does it have to strictly be rain water?

Yes. Charge your glass of water like you would a crystal.

If you don’t have the time or means to collect rain water, you can purify your tap water by boiling it. Stick a crystal in it for extra charge. Leave it outside or in a windowsill over night esp. on a full moon, but even a waxing moon is good, then you have moon water. Do the same during the day and you have sun water.

With the days so long, right now is a great time to make sun water, but there’s a full moon on the 24th so any of the three days leading up to it should make sufficiently potent moon water, too.

If you’re in a situation where you’d be exposing yourself by leaving water out that long in an unusual place, leave a small crystal. I usually use quartz, but any stone significant to you will charge, even a discrete herb or two will charge and then you can add them to your water.

If you have local springs, those are a great source of charged water.

Charge it yourself by visualizing your energy flowing into it, but be careful to think of yourself recharging that same energy. From the ground is fine, the earth is an endless source of energy for personal power. You’re creating a connection with a giant biosphere that contains you too, it won’t reject giving or receiving your energy.

Depends on your purpose but there’s absolutely nothing that says you have to use rain water in spell work. At all. Now if you’re trying to call rain with rain water, then yes that would be the best fit. But otherwise there’s nothing wrong with tap or well water. The spirit is still very much there.

All tap water was rain water at *some* point. The only time I’d say you need to use anything specific is when you deem it necessary to the work and not the alternatives.

Most tap water is sourced at some kind of lake like reservoir before it flows into the system to get treated, that being said it at some point it came down from the sky and flowed into the reservoir. So yes. You can use it
