Hi y’all, so I wanted to bring up something I’ve been trying to understand lately. In the 5 years I’ve owned tarot cards, I’ve only pulled The Lovers once – in a reading with my ex boyfriend. That relationship completely changed the course of my life and ultimately after a few months things ended and we are no longer in each other’s lives. In my current relationship, i consistently pull Wheel of Fortune and The World. I know the general hubbub around The Lovers is that it represents a soulmate but I don’t understand why the only time I pulled it was with someone who didn’t last more than 4 months?

The Lovers doesn’t necessarily represent “soul mates.” My reading of the lovers is that it represents choices. This could be the choice to align your lives and grow together, or it could be the choice to leave someone

i almost never interpret lovers as a soulmate and i almost always interpret it as a choice! sort of a fork in the road situation. in relationship readings i would say the lovers represents an obstacle in the relationship that will force you to make a big decision, usually whether to remain in the relationship or give up whatever causes the conflict. but the meaning also depends on the context, question, other cards pulled, etc.

Just like with Death and Judgement, the Lovers doesn’t necessarily mean what it says on the tin. For me, the lovers always represent a bond, or a link. Others here mention a reading of it as “choices”, but I tend more so to view it as “obligations, binds”. In much the same way as love can be a restrictive bond, so too can the lovers represent a deep connection with another – one that may not necessarily be beneficial, or good.

The Lovers is a very passionate card I wouldn’t consider it to mean soul mates though, often the passion overrides everything else. The two of cups, on the other hand is a very true love type card.
