When I was about 5 years old, our family had a black sheepdog mix that helped me through a rough time in my life. I have always been an animal lover, but this dog touched me in a different sort of way and definitely helped me though that time. My parents had her put to sleep when I was about 7. Anyway, I was looking to adopt a cat from the shelter 5 years ago and, once again, I’ve always been an animal lover but as soon as I saw her, I knew she was the one. She was very shy (had been a feral previously) but I felt a connection. Since I’ve had her, she always seems to know when something is up and will come and lick me (she’s very big into licking.) I feel that she is the same spirit as the dog my family had all those years ago, come back to help me again. Is this possible?

I work with a familiar spirit who appears as a swan but they can also appear as a human. They aren’t bound to a terrestrial form. They’re spirits.

Yes. Reincarnation is a thing so could be.
Also familiars are in my experience not really an animal per se, but a spirit that can idk form a symbiotic relationship with an animal in order to aid a practitioner in their magical workings.
So there’s two ways your old dog could be around: one reincarnated as a cat, shifted into a spirit that collaborates with your cat to act as your magic helper. Though a familiar spirit does need to be summoned so you’d know then if it was your dog bc you’d have called them specifically to aid you
But also: it could simply be that a new & wonderful soul has come into your life.
Either way it is best to respect them as their new being & not burden them with expectations of their previous incarnation
