If someone was raised in a different country from where he/she was born, which country counts as the “home” and which one as “foreign settlement”?

  • Does the 4th house and the term “home” mean where you were born or where you grew up?

It’s about the home environment, it can mean both places, at least for me. 4th house themes are wide around topics like family, home, mother, ancestry etc.

It’s not specific in that way. It represents your familial roots, your childhood home environment, and your current home environment for a start.

If one is born in one country, the parents’ native country, and then moves abroad, often that will be shown either in the natal 4th house, or in the transits or progressions or profections (or some other timing tool) at the time of the move.

There may be some tie to 9th house factors, such as ruler of 4th in 9th for example, or some other planetary aspect that may connect planets of both houses. Just keep in mind, we could move 20 times in a lifetime, the 4th is still just our home environment.

I know someone with a 4th house sagittarius, who often had foreign students living with them, and who married a foreigner (also shown by ruler of 9th in 7th, and jupiter ruling both 4th and 7th as well as rulers of 4th/9th in aspect and also both4th/9th rulers in aspect to 7th ruler). Additional aspects as well – so there was a lifelong influence of immigrants, foreign travelers, and foreign influences in the makeup of the home and family for this person, even though this person never lived abroad. There are many ways any house can play out, yet still remain true to what is indicated.

We certainly can see changes to the home via transits, annual profections and progressions. Whether that’s moving, or remodeling, or major repairs, or changes in the makeup of the family living there or other influences.

Adding on to the informative comments from others- it feels like in its deepest archetypal sense, where you FEEL AT HOME. Your nurturing, security, safety, vulnerability, mother wounding, emotional stability, and foundations/ roots that take hold. And all of the things that surround the development, change, and influence of these factors. The most traditional, material thing would be your childhood home and how you grew up. My Sun, Jupiter (also conj my IC) Ceres, and South Node are all in the 4th house and my foundational security has been a recurring theme I keep working on. Realizing my foundations were built on unlevel ground, and rebuilding. Or that my roots were not providing the nourishment I need, and re-discovering “chosen” family. Your HOME is where you mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally come back to, to rest, recharge and revive yourself before going out into the world. Big WOMB energy

4th house in sagittarius would be the best of both worlds, lol

Jokes aside, I tend to think it’s about where you grew up, as 4th house also means family, mother and other themes. Plus, as long as you live you’ll have a 4th house, and you can’t really “separate” of it, even with physical distance, you know?

I like to think of the 4th house as:

    * Your early maternal or feminine influences
    * Your roots (not just physical, but psychological – the innate patterns and behaviors handed down to you)
    * The point of origin – or in other words, no matter where you go in this world, you will carry that particular energy with you to set up house and home

Look to the 3rd, 9th, and 12th for movement. The 3rd is your more immediate environment and domestic travel while the 9th and 12th have domain over travel abroad. The 12th rules *very* distant places.

Roots and growth – your soul.

Also (but this is my theory) , how much at peace you are with yourself – or allowed to have, as parents play a heavy part in your possibilities for growth. A challenged 4th house signals trouble in reaching inner peace and connecting to life in a positive way.

Growing up abroad (or moving abroad later) – well, a connection between 4th and 9th is likely – my 9th-house ruler is placed in 4th and I’ve spent almost half my life outside my home–country. Should add that I have strong Jupiter-aspects as well (trine Moon/Merc, sextile Mars)

It’s the home within yourself, what makes you feel at home, what brings you emotional and psychological fulfillment, your maternal roots, the foundation, the root of who you are, family, your mother, what it was like in your mothers womb, and it could be how you will raise your daughters.

I tend to regard it as roots. In case of relocation to different country, I’d check 12th house.

I read the comments below me and maybe I just need to think more about it, because I’m still confused. I’m trying to put everything others have written together and make sense of it for myself.

What if the native was adopted to another country within the first 3 months of birth? What if the adoptive parents divorce and the child is moved back and forth across the Atlantic and grows up with both cultures?

If there is a country where the native has lived most of their life and early childhood, is that seen in the 4th house?

    Thinking out loud below:

What if the sign on the 4th house cusp is the preceding sign to that which takes up most of the 4th house and there’s a planet…say Venus in Aquarius sq. Uranus in 1st, opp. Saturn in 10th, trine Pluto in 12th….I might be answering my own question – I know nothing about either of my birth parents, but maybe it fits with the theme of not bonding with adoptive mother and having really poor relations with her, when she pops up in my life, despite my efforts to try to limit our contact. If I had a spine, I’d have cut her out of my life a long time ago! 9th house cusp/Gemini < empty.

Yes, I read the rules. Not sure if this crosses over the line. Then I’ll delete if someone doesn’t do it for me.

It could be both: where you’re from and ongoing living situation throughout your life. As a recent personal example, as Saturn and Jupiter ingressed into aqua, they entered my 4th house. As soon as they ingressed my living situation changed. I was also born in a different country than the one I live in. I have a day-sect Jupiter angular in my 4th and I’ve also been blessed by fortunate living situations even if they are in my country of origin or the country I’m living in.

For me I view it as my home where I grew up and the situations surrounding it. I have Scorpio in my 4th house along with Pluto. In my case, it was my father that made my home life hell with his alcohol addiction and narcissism/gas lighting behavior.

4th house would represent your house in general and it’s related to family life/dynamic.

    9th house- foreging places

12th house- foregin places across the sea/world.
