When I was a child, my best friend and I used to love magic. We had extremely active imaginations (or intuitions?) and would come up with all sorts of things that looking back, were rather mystical.

One such thing we would do was “make fairies” by picking a flower (I think iris?) near the pond at my house, putting it in the center of a reed plant we picked (I think cyperus papyrus?), and then wrapping the top of the plant with algae from the pond. These little treasures were then laid on a bolder in the pond or at it’s edge. We would return the next day to them gone (or so memory serves, who knows).

As I am just beginning to explore ancient lore, specifically in the water/sea traditions of gaels/celts given my Irish/French/Germanic heritage, I am extremely curious if anyone has seen or heard of any such thing. I’m open to all interpretations, ideas, and input! Thank you for engaging!

Thinking back on my childhood, I’m seeing many witchy things that are entertaining to reinterpret now.

I have a *somewhat* similar experience.

First I wanna say that I know how the first thing you’ll hear is DON’T MESS WITH THE FAE. THE FAE ARE BAD! As I’ve so often gotten from other people 😅 But I just wanna make it clear that my experiences and *my culture* are different from the bad fae that other people warn people to stay away from.

I’m Hawaiian. In my culture we have what others would see as fae-like creatures called the menehune. They’re short like dwarves or brownies. They only come out at night and speak low, although they’ve been known to be able to yell so loud they could be hear from island to island.

The menehune are also amazing craftsmen as they built some of our roads, walls, and temples back in the day. They love to eat bananas, taro, and sweet potatoes. They befriend people that are kind and they punished those who mistreated them in any way. They also *really* love games and they have a bit of a mischievous streak in them.

When I was little and in the forests of Oahu I would often have little run ins with the menehune. They played games with me and I’d hear their little voices laughing. When my step-dad was younger he had his food stolen when he wasn’t looking and a little menehune actually told him thanks before running away 😂 All my step-dad saw was this little brown man taking off with his food and to this day has never forgotten lol.

I think you might’ve come across some kinder fae that accepted your gifts! Definitely dive deeper into your heritage as I’ve always found it easier to connect with aspects from my own culture very easily.
