Wow, this was wonderful. I have always felt like Cancer descriptions did not fit right with my Cancer sun, and I especially love how this goes further to describe how Cancer stereotypes are often seen as negative just because they happen to be more feminine traits. Since I have a Sag moon, this article also made me see how those two placements are possibly more in harmony than I give them credit for, because Cancer is exalted when it is in Jupiter. Thanks so much for sharing!

This is such a great write up. Like someone else said I feel like my Sagittarius moon and rising complement my cancer sun perfectly. I never felt stereotypically femme in the cancer side of me, but I admit I am always watching and observing the situations and engagements around me. I think my sag placements utilize that to help me understand life and my philosophical pursuits and curate a life/self (e.g., “home”) to suit my needs. Thanks for really getting past the pop-astrology version of us cancarians

Ong I’m only a few paragraphs in and I’m so so grateful for this! Thank you !

This is what I keep saying – everything about astrology has been written by a person and each of those people lives iN a sOciEtY and not a vaccuum and the things that they believe and say are influenced by their cultural experiences. Some astrologers, but very few, seem aware of this and try to deconstruct and analyze before sharing their thoughts. But even people who try can’t ever have full awareness, and most aren’t even aware of their unawareness. A lot of what modern astrologer talk about is of course based on things written a long time ago when a lot of beliefs were different. Also, lifestyles were really different and so the way that an energy may manifest in a person would probably be a lot different than it would now. Also everyone now has different experiences.

Another great article I’ve read recently ( https://lithub.com/who-needs-astrology/ ) that put words to thoughts that were bubbling in my head discusses astrologer Sheila Farrants views on Pisces: “One example is her interpretation of Pisces, often stereotyped as overemotional, reclusive and with addictive, self-sabotaging tendencies. Farrant returns to the core themes of Pisces: responsiveness, vulnerability, global interconnection, dreams and the subconscious, creativity. Instead of essentializing people with Pisces aspects as “just being that way,” she speculates that existing in Eurowestern capitalist modernity as a Pisces is incredibly difficult—Piscean values are not respected or integrated into wider society, hence the escapism and need for sanctuary.”

people seem to treat astrology the way weird Christians (as in the ones that are weird, not saying all are weird) treat the Bible. Like as if god wrote it and just dropped it down a lil chute in the clouds and it’s to be taken literally. It’s even weirder with astrology considering there are so many sources that all of us read lol. People have many times told me I’m contradicting myself by saying I love astrology and also that I don’t believe a specific common narrative in astrology. Astrology isn’t facts based like science because magic understands that facts aren’t as impenetrable as people think. And also because most of them aren’t really able to be proven with the scientific method (which is held by our society as god once was)

Cancer stereotypes and bashing is rooted in misogyny. “Feminine” traits, being too “emotional” and empathetic and a nurturing figure … criticisms of Cancer are fairly akin to criticisms and stereotypes of women as a whole.

Cancer is reduced to being manipulative, a cry baby, its negative traits are *overwhelmingly* highlighted above all else. In popular astrological discourse, it’s incredibly uncommon to see anyone have effusive – or *any* – praise of Cancer.

Cancer’s strength and beauty is in its ability to persevere, its uncanny ability to empathize and protect and weather storms with grace. The mother is necessary for life, the mother nurtures and selflessly gives and possesses incredible levels of compassion and understanding. Cancer has unwaveringly decisive and strong instincts, intuition and energy.

As someone that has been casually into astrology for years, this has been an enduring issue. I feel bad for young people first learning about astrology, having to contend with being told that their sign is weak and hated.

    This is relatable!
I’m a Cancer sun Sag rising and I can relate on being ambitious about career and living life itself and not being a housewife but I do believe I can pull those two things off just as fine. 😎

Not a sun Cancer but have Mars in 1st house cancer and can’t tell you how much hate I’ve received/seen regarding this placement. Had an astrologer tell me she would never want to get in a fight with me cause I’m the kind of crazy that would slash her tires.
Me who is afraid to even drive 5 mph over the speed limit. Smh.
