Let me start this by saying that I don’t actively work with spirits or the dead, but I do believe that they can guide people. I also believe that if I have any guides, they might be my grampys.
Around Mabon, I had the urge to make a besom. I decided to forage the materials by picking up a fallen branch that spoke to me, I had a tree in mind that is pretty much rotting and dying so there are always branches and twigs around it and it’s only a short walk from my house. I told my mother about this and she seemed to think it was strange, but didn’t make any attempts to convince me otherwise – in fact, she even pointed out twigs she thought would work.
We get to the tree while walking the dogs and my one dog who loves a stick, brings me up the perfect handle for my besom. I get home, pockets full of twigs and this branch over my shoulder and get to work, ending up with a besom that I was proud of but… not quite happy with. I couldn’t put my finger on why, but it was something about the twigs.
A few nights ago, I had a dream in which my one grampy – my mother’s dad – kept talking about the trees and bushes in the garden. I couldn’t see him, but I could hear him perfectly and I remember him saying “When your mum cuts the lilac, ask her if you can have it.”
To which I responded, “What about the olive tree?”
I can’t remember his response, but I know it was a positive one. So the next day, I bring it up to my mother and then remember that she had recently cut the lilacs and the branches were on a bit of grass by on the end of my street. So I picked those up, stripped them off the dead leaves and flowers and I’ve just put them on my besom instead of the mix of sticks and twigs I had before. It’s a bit bigger than I originally expected but I like it a lot more and it feels more like me.Did my grampy help me out with my besom, and if so, how can I thank him? He believed in a lot of stuff and I’m sure would have just found witchcraft interesting at least.
Sorry this is so long, it was just a very big experience for me and now I’m wondering if I’ve understood this right.
