poirierbmMemberHowdy!
I’m a Hellenic Witch, who is less than a year into the craft. That means I’m now coming up on my first Yule.
I know Yule has Norse origins and I don’t want to appropriate anyone’s holiday.
Can I celebrate Yule even if I don’t work with anyone in the Norse pantheon?
Thanks!

GuestDecember 27, 2021 at 6:05 pmYule is the celebration of the winter solstice, many cultures have some kind of mid winter celebration, if you’re worried about appropriating look in to the traditions of Hellenic people in mid winter see if you could do some of that.
On the other hand Yule is first and foremost a time to celebrate the days starting to get longer and spending time with friends and family. I see no problem with celebrating Yule no matter your deities, as long as you don’t do anything specifically related to a deity you don’t work with/believe in.
Edit: also appropriation is mostly an issue for groups that are stigmatized and not allowed to openly practice but then others take part of their practice and do it for fun with no understanding of the meaning and importance of the practice. This does not apply to Yule. The Norse want to share Yule and are not prevented from celebrating themselves

GuestDecember 27, 2021 at 6:05 pmI’m Norse and I say do the hell ‘appropriate’ the holiday and celebrate it! It doesn’t take away from me and adds to your life, hopefully.

GuestDecember 27, 2021 at 6:05 pmYou absolutely can, but if you’re looking for holidays around this time within your tradition there’s also Haloa (honoring Demeter and Dionysus) and Poseidea (guess who?). In Ancient Greece the month of December was also known as Poseideon.

GuestDecember 27, 2021 at 6:05 pmHi, this isn’t actually an answer to your question because I’m not Norse and also I’m a baby witch so I don’t know much, which leads to my question, what is a Hellenic Witch?
