Thanks for taking a look at this. This isn’t about ghosts, more the spirit or guardian spirit of the house itself.

I’m just getting into communicating and giving offerings to my house spirit, though up until now I’ve only referred to them as ‘them.’ How would I try to find their name or at least give them a name that’s respectful? I have a way of communicating to ask them if they like a name but how should I start finding one for them?

    Edit: clarification

I call mine Edna (mostly because I can’t remember the name of the old lady that carked it in my house) and am constantly telling her I *will get the salt* if she doesn’t quit her foolery.

While names are powerful, they aren’t necessary for building a relationship with your house spirits. If you’re approaching this from an animistic point of view then really any name reflective of your home and meaningful will suffice. The home may give a name, it may be neutral towards being named, or the concept of a name may be completely foreign to the spirit. As long as you aren’t saying something openly disrespectful (and you keep your house clean!) then the spirit will be fine most likely being called whatever. They aren’t like the Good Neighbors who require a lot of rules to interact with, it’s your home! Just get cozy with it, keep it clean, and give some offerings here and there.

You might find the name just come to you one day. If you want to find a name you could try divination while saying some names to see if that produces any results?

I go with intuition, honestly. I use my pendulum whenever I encounter a spirit I can’t name, and when something pops into my head, I ask if it’s an acceptable name. If not, I go through the alphabet, which can take a while. It’s how I’ve named my plants, my house, and even some of my tools. Sometimes I just go with something like “George” and it just sorta sticks; other times, I find myself going with really weird names, like from old languages or just weird jumbles of words, like “hairy foot tom” or “blue davis”
