It’s a story about how young girls can find their worth outside of marrying a man, I’m not making that up. I wonder if the people who say “it’s disrespectful to the story’s origin” would feel if Disney had any actual respect for the story’s origin?
Oh, and myths of mermaids come from all over the world, including Africa, so while “The Little Mermaid” might not have been about a black woman, it doesn’t disrespect the mythology.
Story can be found online for free, I used Youtube

It was my favorite fairytale growing up. I remember being upset when I saw the Disney version because they changed it.

yo we’re talking about the book where the prince fails to give her any attention, shes about to die, her sisters sacrifice their hair to give her a dagger that will allow her to live if she kills him, she can’t bring herself to and dies, and for loving him and being noble of heart shes given a soul and allowed to join the world of the spirits ? That’s the version i was given, genuinely wondering how that relates to finding your worth outside of marriage

Andersen’s stories are full of strong female characters. Read the ice queen (? Is the title good) if you want an adventure full of them. I love his writing.

The first time I saw Rusulka at the opera I got big Little Mermaid vibes.

I always thought the end bit where naughty children who make her cry add to her sentence as a spirit was something parents would use kind of like Santa Claus. Lol.

I always loved the original story of The Little Mermaid growing up. I was a young adult when the Disney animated film came out. I was so disappointed how they changed the end to the exact opposite of the original story. Instead of a “be true to yourself” story it turns into a “change everything about yourself including body modification for a guy” story.

Girl gives up everything about herself that matters because she thinks that’s what the boy she’s crushing on wants.

Boy still isn’t into her and goes with another girl.

Girl commits suicide rather than live without him.

Yep, definitely not the story the Patriarchy wants little girls to hear. “Changing yourself to suit his needs is always rewarded” is the preferred party line.
