I’m still a young witch but my progression went like this:

    > Basic meditation (before I even entered witchcraft). Just calming the mind and letting go of my surroundings, letting the numb feeling take my body. Occasionally I can see rough imagery, typically of things I’ve already seen, like talking and dancing with friends in a club. Even faces sometimes, though they’re always somewhat distorted. I try to control the imagery but haven’t quite gone the hang yet even now.

    > Then meditating with energy. This was my first step into witchcraft. Imagine bringing white energy/light into yourself. This could be breathing it in, or drawing it in from the space around you, through your skin and into your body.

    > Affirmation stuff with incense. I’d put an incense at my window, pull up a chair, put some nice meditation music of whatever type I was feeling that day. A little light meditation, pull in that white energy, then when I was ready I lit the incense. A little more deep breathing, and thought of the things I appreciated, mostly my friends and family. As for the affirmations I said to myself, “I am loved, because I am easy to love, and I am deserving of it” a few times over while I thought of all the love I do receive. Felt great after, and felt the love of my friends more afterwards.

    > Once I was confident with manipulating energy, I moved onto stronger spell work. I wanted to repel negative energy that seemed to keep finding me. I got a glass, some table salt, some mint, and a piece of black jade I had recently bought. Oh, and an incense. I spent a few minutes meditating with the black jade to guide energy and intent into it. Put salt in the glass, then some mint leaves, then a little more salt. Black jade stayed in my hand. I said whatever words I said, lit the incense, meditated for a few mins, put the incense out, forgot about the spell for the rest of the day. It seems to have worked!

And that’s about it for me 🙂 hope this helps!

If you’re serious, find a coven, mentors and any practitioners you get an audience with. Don’t limit yourself to any one path, but don’t be reckless. Be careful with what you read online. There is no substitute for safety, there are rules to learn and follow, similarly, there are limitations and boundaries to understand. How far are you willing to go and how willing will you be to learn?

I started by buying books on the subject, but that’s how I start most things. I started with Silver Ravenwolf and Wicca books many, many, years ago, because they were what was available in my local bookshop (this was pre-google search!), and gradually I made my own path. I’ve read books produced by pagans on many different paths, I’ve engaged with online forums, and I’ve attended the odd convention. I’ve also taken inspiration from fictional characters when something has resonated with me! There’s no right way to start, honestly, but research is always a good place to go first. Just take whatever you learn from others, whether online, in a book, or in person, with a pinch of salt and trust your own intuition. If something feels right (or wrong!) you’ll know, but you have to learn to listen to yourself. You’ll work it out!
