so i’m not necessarily a beginner but when it comes to actually doing spell work, i am. is there any way i can practice baneful magik, hexes or jinx’s without putting it on someone? i don’t need to nor do i think i will anytime soon & i won’t unless i absolutely need to. but if that time comes, i want to be prepared & not have anything really backfire & be protected.

In theory, you could make a poppet or doll and practice on that, just make sure to dispose of it far away from you or anyone that could be affected by it, just in case. I mean, once you’re done practicing on it, throw it away, seal the bag, and take the bag to an isolated dumpster somewhere. If you’re really going all out, you might even consider putting it in a bag with a sealing/binding sigil on it, and then throwing *that* away. Or disposing of it however you see fit. I do this on myself, sort of. If a certain planetary influence has been fucking me up (merc Rx), I make a poppet of myself and make it very attractive to that planetary energy- the idea being that the merc Rx energies will get distracted by the poppet and leave me alone. But I digress.

On the other hand, I don’t personally believe that hexes/jinxes/curses are such a different form of magic than what people normally practice (of course this is a broad statement and doesn’t include every form of magic), so as long as you’re practicing *other* types of magic, you’re building the same muscle-memory; intent and focus, mainly. But also just *how* to cast **a** spell, *any* spell. If you’ve figured that out, then you just change the style/direction of the spell a bit to be more baneful.

As JadedOccultist said; poppet would work. Also you can do workings on inanimate objects such as a rock or stone.

This would have the added benefit of directing the negativity which would be stored. If there ever came a time you wish to do one to someone; the object could be given or placed at the residence/workplace of the targeted individual & activated.

Practice blessing & removing curses & healing.

Get a feel how good things & bad things interact, get a sense for the structure of things

Why/what do you think makes magic “work”?
I think that this is an important question to consider.
Imo, the only thing that matters is the ability to generate/raise the desired form of energy and the ability to direct the energy in a particular direction.

So for example if I’m doing a ritual that includes a song or long litany I practice that, but this is a memory exercise. The only way to really practice spellwork is to work on identifying different types of energy, then practicing raising and lowering that energy within yourself. The issue with applying this to hexing is you basically have to raise “dark/negative” energy, and then hold onto it, and then lower it, and then raise it again. Very hard to do this without it having some kind of negative effect on you, at least in the short term.
You can ward against it but holding a ward while purposefully playing with “dark” energy takes a lot of energy and focus

I know this kinda ignores your title, but its not unheard of for witches to cast small hexes on each other with knowledge and consent as a way to test their defenses and wards. Maybe if you know a witch you have a cool enough relationship with, you can try that?

Yes, you can try them out on situations and things instead, if you make the right adjustment to the spell. Dont worry about backfire as long as you put the intention in the spell that it wont cause any harm and you dont try to hex something consacrated or holding a charge
