Sometimes I’ll do a spread and have an initial, obvious interpretation but then I’ll second doubt myself or feel like there’s an additional meaning – and I’m not sure how to explore those without going down a rabbithole (I’m one of those practicioners guilty of reading spreads more than acting on them).

How do you decide when you’re done with an interpretation?

For instance, on January 6, I pulled the emperor card from the Thoth deck in my daily spread – which on the surface came across as commentary on the political situation (Trump as emperor, which implies the whole process of rise to power, conflict, and fall), but that interpretation didn’t seem to have much of a personal connection (other than a vague feeling like I needed more structure in my life in order to deal with the threat posed by people like him) nor did it seem like new information – it felt correct, but not correct enough if that makes sense.

So I had the intuition (based on some other post here I think about searching the deck) of seeing what cards were next to the Hierophant card in the deck and that actually seemed more pertinent to my personal organization.

There’s no such thing as a “trivial” read in tarot, only how deeply you care to look. You chose to view the Emperor as a comment on the world outside your influence, and of course, you found relevance there. Try looking within, try seeing the Emperor less as a person and more as a symbolic representation of order, or the lack thereof, in your life.

Going down the rabbit hole is pretty much where Tarot shines. Jump in and try the rabbit hole first and see where it leads.
