Sad_Dragonfruit7077MemberI’m mixed race, one side is Ukrainian/Russian -American and the other side is African-American. None of my family really knows exactly where we are from. I really want to learn more about and reconnect to my heritage. If anyone has any tips or resources for studying Ukrainian/ Russian folk magic and paganism or African-American folk magic and paganism, it would be greatly appreciated.
thank you in advance!

GuestAugust 17, 2022 at 6:59 amI almost picked up a book on Slavic folk magic a few days ago. I’ll try to find it again and let you know.
Where I live, the Gullah have a strong Root tradition that carries right back to western Africa. Stories of Anansi the spider God are really common here.
Maybe try searching for Gullah history, that might help as well.

GuestAugust 17, 2022 at 6:59 amYou absolutely welcome! My father’s family is Polska so I have an interest in the Slavic stuff as well. Unfortunately I think a lot of that was lost during WW2.

GuestAugust 17, 2022 at 6:59 amDo you know where in Africa you might originate from? I ask because there’s a lot of traditions that vary by tribes/ethnicities. So if you’re looking to connect with your roots, the first step is finding out what your roots actually are since African American is a very wide net to cast.

GuestAugust 17, 2022 at 6:59 amI’m mixed also, primarily Black and Caucasian (Mostly American/British Colonial and various Western European influences) with some Native American.
I learned a lot from doing my ethnicity DNA test. I didn’t know anyone on my father’s side until a few years ago, so it was super interesting to learn about my ancestors and where they were from. I knew I was Louisiana Creole / black on my mom’s side, but the test helped me learn about my white ancestry.
I’ve been starting to learn about hoodoo, but I’m still in the early stages. It is a folk tradition based on African, Native American and Christian influences. Even though I’m no longer Christian, I’ve been feeling like my ancestors want me to learn more about Hoodoo and Louisiana Voodou. These practices are also referred to as rootwork and conjure. But I’m sure some more knowledgeable witches can give some additional information on it if that’s a path you are curious about.
