I’ve heard about this before, and I’ve seen a few similar examples in Santeria, though I’m not sure if it’s more of a “fantasy” witchcraft thing, or a real thing?

Watching Sabrina the Teenage Witch on Netflix last night and an egg was cracked into a jar to detect a curse on Sabrina.

Also seen on WitchTok (I know there’s a lot of misinformation there), and in a few other depictions of “fantasy” witchcraft.

Are eggs actually used in a way to detect curses or lingering negative energies?

Is there any type of general spell work using eggs other than in Santeria (I know of using eggs to cure fever)?

Yes, they are. Here is one description of the procedure and basic meanings. It is known as an “egg cleanse”, and both cleans stuff off, but is also a tool to tell if something was tried on you. I had a friend who was grifted this way. Easy to fake.

Yup! Be careful with Hollywood depictions. I vaguely recall seeing the idea that two yolks has meaning, but eggs are sorted by weight these days, so you’ll frequently find a carton full of eggs with double yolks. Usually, when used for augury, you’re looking for something unusual in the yolk, like a red or brown spot or something similar. And if you go this route, remember that in some latin cultures, eggshells in the trash are seen as a way for malevolent witches to get you, so crush them up before you dispose of them.

Different types of practices aside from Santeria use eggs in cleansing rituals. I wouldn’t say that the individual uses are fantasy but Sabrina and their writers definitely pulled from an assortment of practices, without deference to their cultural/ historical/ practice based history to cobble together their idea of “witchcraft “.

The egg thing is real but is also really well known.

Women have been raiding their chicken coops since the first coops were built. I have recently been reading a book about sex in the middle ages and eggs were mentioned in a kitchen witchcraft bit for causing a man to want more sex (but also it might give him a headache lol).

Curses get overblown a lot but eggs to detect something strange is afoot is common practice. It may be as a result of a curse or it might be something else entierly.

Reading eggs is not a common skill nowerdays. The two main metholds I know involve simply cracking the egg in a bowl to observe it’s unique characteristics or cracking an egg over a pot of boiling water and observing the patterns it makes.

The former is only really viable if you know a farmer and can get fresh out the chicken eggs. Supermarket eggs tend to be fairly one in the same (after all Karen will sue if there is a speck of blood in her egg regardless of how it got there) and often you will find the boiling/hot water works better. You interpret it much like smoke.

It’s also a common way con folk con others. They alter an egg to try and make you pay for curse removal.

I fuck’n hate Sabrina. It’s brought an influx of folks that treat our practices as an aesthetic & think “magic” is supposed to look & work like it does on TV. SMH
