Opinions: Are you an Occultist

I am curious to hear how many of you consider your craft an occult practice. How does the word occult make you feel? What do you understand by the word occult?

There are no wrong answers, I am just trying to gauge if there is a difference between how the general population views the occult vs how the witch community views it.

I feel as though for the general population the word occult conjures images of “devil worship” and what have you. For me I think the word occult means studying spirituality that isn’t accepted by the larger cultural population as a whole. That being said the word occult acts as a term of comfort this is because I was bullied a lot for having “fringe” interests (the occult, history, classic literature, etc.) even though I looked fairly “normal” on the outside. I guess the occult was a shelter from the bullying and something that I was just really interested in and am still interested in. Yeah, but I don’t use that word. Not because of any dislike of that word but because of the area I live in and how people would associate it. I pretty much don’t tell anyone outside of my immediate family and this sub about my practice. But I believe that secrecy is important in the craft so that wouldn’t change even if I lived in another area.

By pure definition, Occult would eclipse witchcraft. I prefer to think of myself as a magician, psychic dabbler or spiritual wanderer, chaos practitioner. All the disciplines are occult by nature, but bookstores may shelve may them separately.

I believe I was born with the gift. Books, games,films. I am just starting to get into the practical stuff. Like directions of things, and maybe even the odd bit of bad behaviour or curses. But I class the occult to be mainly, for me, self exploration which comes to me as I grow older.

Do I consider witchcraft in general as occult? No, not anymore.
My personal practice? Yes, because I keep the bulk of it as hidden knowledge.
