I have been reading tarot (non-professionally) for about 8 years sometimes practicing more often than other times. This past year or so my ability to read for myself seems to have gone out the window. My readings for other people still seem relevant and helpful, but when I read for myself it seems like the cards don’t pertain to my situation and I end up not understanding the message. I know some people don’t like reading for themselves at all due to bias and stuff like that, but in the past reading for myself provided really valuable insights. And usually if I didn’t understand at first the meaning would clear up over time.

Anyone have an idea why I would experience this. I’m open to psychological scientific explainations, and magickal woo-woo ideas too.

Well, here’s a no woo idea for you 🙂

It’s covid time. Even if you completely flout all the guidelines (and I truly hope you don’t), chances are that your day to day activities have been restricted. Professionally, socially, and maybe romantically, our lives are reduced to a really small circle of people, places, and things that we’re able to do.

We can all understand “the tower” in light of this year. That’s not hard. If I lost my job, my dog passed, and I haven’t been able to see my family, how would I understand the ten of cups? It’s not like there’s a lot of fulfillment for a person in that situation. In other times, that person might apply the ten of cups to a relationship with a friend rather than the above tragedies. Now, they might not even have that.

The no woo explanation is that tarot cards aren’t connected to anything, so that means that they can be “wrong,” in that they don’t apply to the question at hand. Generally, readers can help to interpret the idea of the card no matter what, since human lives are so varied, but with so little going on… well, it’s slim pickings. I’m not sure what you’ve been up to, but is it possible that reading for yourself is getting difficult because due to the “smallness” of life right now, there’s not a whole lot to read for? You could also be really reducing the focus onto only really big events in your life, and neglecting to apply to cards to smaller ones.

Do you usually read for yourself with the exact same format that you read for others? Sometimes things “jump out” from readings because we have fewer presuppositions in the way. Self knowledge gets in the way when reading for yourself. I find it useful to structure readings differently for others than I would for me, my own readings I spend more time meditating on, will use a different deck, or may leave some or all of the cards in the reading out in plain view for a couple days. Sometimes it just takes longer to click, and sometimes our own worry or stress can get in the way.

This happens to me. I either take a break from reading for myself or take a picture of my spread and read it the next morning after sleep. Love and light to you

i dont think i have magickal woo-woo ideas for you but i will tell you what i do whenever i experience this feeling. I meditate more, sage the room and my cards and try different decks. If things still dont make sense, i take time off reading cards. completely. i dont read for others nor for myself. It kind of feels like a psychic reset or something
