They can tell you a possible future, but they are more for guidance and self examination in your present. If you rely too much on tarot cards and truly believe they tell you the definite end all-be all future, it is very likely that you will become too reliant on the cards. Don't use them unless you are in a calm state of mind and willing to take things with a grain of salt. The future always changes, and so can the outcome of a tarot reading.
If you are too attached to an issue, say you really want an ex back or a job promotion, there is a chance you may misread the cards and misunderstand what they are telling you in order to believe a certain narrative. It is best to have someone else do the tarot reading for you at that point. And remember, the future always changes. It's best to ask about the present, such as “what can you tell me about my relationship with (insert name here)” or “what do I need to know about my career right now?
