Here’s an update to my post from about some month ago. The complaints we filed against the floor manager have been deemed legit and have been investigated
    They’ve found four issues:
    1) actively displaying a negative, sexist and condescending attitude towards women
    2) inappropriate comments about clothing & bodies
    3) unequal treatment of team members
    4) repetitively and persistently harassment

The investigation is complete. The judgement is that the floor manager must receive a formal write up in his files of his behavior. He must attend multiple classes on appropriate behavior in the workplace.
The board of directors is disturbed by this and is adding investigations into workplace behavior throughout the company.

The floor manager is clearly wounded by this. He’s withdrawn and moody. He’s removed from coaching people or speaking to younger women in the office without a real need for it. He just does admin work in his cubicle.
The female department head has taken the complaints & investigations very personal. Less about what’s been going on, but more that she wasn’t informed and allowed to handle it within the department. She’s furious and says we betrayed her trust deeply.
She asked me why I did this. Simple, I wanted a genuine solution to a systemic problem. Not a schoolyard one. Because he would revert back to his behavior if it was just her speaking to him.

Why did he behave like this? A female low level manager in our department hinted that his behavior may stem from the extreme loneliness in his personal life and just being at the company so long he’s gotten too comfortable. She went on to say that she’s quite familiar with his behavior. He made attempts to flirt with her in the past. She shot them down immediately and reminded him she’s happily married.
On the topic of his antics going overboard, she even told him on multiple occasions to be mindful of his behavior. Every time she got one of two responses, if she got any at all: “this is just who I am” and “these are my work methods/the rules, I don’t see why you question them”.

I’m pleased with the outcome. Everybody gets to learn from this ghastly situation. I’ve done the right things in my eyes and take the dirty glances from the department head and floor manager in stride. I’m understanding of their pain. I’ve given my notice too and happily job hunting.

That’s it. Thank you for your patience and support.

Good. Fuck them. They’re not entitled to bad behavior just because they’re used to getting away with it.

Good job and best of luck in your new job search! It’s hard to speak up, you really set an excellent example for others there to see how to do it.

I have to wonder if the lady supervisor who’s mad about this realizes that she’s… like exactly the type of person that the abusive guy ignores, downplays, and manipulates? Like. The investigation showed he had no respect for women. How did she think she would change things?

Anyways, I’m really glad you did the proper investigation. I’m so glad things have been found and people are being heard and protected, including you.

    >These are my work methods/the rules, I don’t see why you question them.

Because they’re inappropriate. If you used appropriate work methods, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Glad you stood up! Good on you!

Oh you know you should report her to HR for questioning why you didn’t come to her and any implication of “betrayal” she percieves – that’s low key retaliation and absolutely something to document because *she. ain’t. allowed. to. do. that*.

Also, your response to her was just *chefs kiss*

Sounds like the department head is part of the problem. I hope the investigation also addressed her antiquated ideas about what men should be allowed to do at work based on their personal lives.

Good for you. Sounds like this was what needed to happen.

Sad to hear that those who need to learn important lessons seem to have their heads in the sand.

The fact that a manager feels like they were betrayed by someone going above them is the reason someone went above them.

Our policy is that anyone who has a supervisory role is mandated to report to HR any issue that could even potentially result in legal action. It’s broad on purpose.

But additionally, the policy recommends telling the offender to stop first, but specifically states that if you’re uncomfortable doing so (hostile work environment), you can go to anyone up the chain, including bypassing all the way to HR.

Ultimately, if the manager didn’t know this guy was behaving inappropriately, it’s her fault for not paying attention, not the employee’s fault for not notifying her directly. The power imbalance is such that every single supervisor/manager has to be making an active effort to stop this stuff from happening, because people WILL NOT REPORT if they feel in any way unsafe. And you build safety by being proactive.

I’m so proud of you for standing up for yourself and your coworkers. But I’m kinda appalled that he wasn’t fired for literally sexually harassing an entire department for years. Like really?? What does it take for someone who consistently acts like that to get fired?

Hopefully he gets the hint now that the office isn’t his hunting grounds and no one wants to be his girlfriend.

The female department head betrayed YOU by not doing anything about it.

She was informed and she failed to handle it, she’s just whinging that she got called out for letting it slide

It’s bad enough dealing with male harassment in the workplace, but women in management enabling it is unforgivable

    Good for you
