The odor of graveyard dirt and negative entity tapping on the door

Every once in awhile my husband and I (both mediums) smell graveyard dirt in our bedroom as we are going to bed. There is also a foreboding feeling in the air, and our cat hides from whatever it is. The spirit will tap on the outside of the closed bedroom door or scratch on it, as if taunting us. My husband grew up with lots of superstitions so he says I shouldn't open the bedroom door and tell off the spirit.

Somehow this entity, which seems negative, got past my spirit fence, which has intention to only let in the positive spirits with no ill intent. Any ideas on what this is, and if its ok for me to tell it I'm going to kick its ass (energetically, of course!) unless it leaves asap? Our house seems to attract a lot of spirit energy, so we are very accustomed to dealing with strange noises and things going bump in the night. LOL.
