[The Woman with the Velvet Necklace](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1300394.The_Woman_with_the_Velvet_Necklace) (La Femme au Collier de Velours) by Alexandre Dumas. It’s a weird little French novel that mixes creepy and historical elements. A velvet choker and chopped off heads are involved.

And proved you can respect your partners wishes in a way most people can’t these days.
And now you are a widower, so after you stop puking and medicating yourself through the sadness you can start rocking that widower cred at the grocery store, and pick up a sweet divorcee who left an abusive relationship, too late. But as soon as she had the strength. She now knows what she wants in a relationship, and it is a lot more care and comfort than sitcom memes.
You meet near the eggs, googling which farm actually has the best practices. She laughs when you reach for the same carton. These chickens are raised locally. You have driven by the farm on the way to work, you laugh, almost embarrassed, you tell her an anecdote about the chickens, you go on a drive to gather stones, berries, mushrooms and sticks, love grows and blooms, 30 years later while holding each other in bed whispering about your hopes, wishes and dreams, she laughs, takes off her choker, becomes the night, and leaves you with a tiny gem, a single star from the black oblivion she had unfurled her wings into.
You lift the jewel.
You cry.
But you know she is happy, and will endure eternally in the song of the night mother.
You lay on your side. Holding a pillow where she is supposed to be. You fall asleep, and die. Warm, and knowing she loved you and endures, and not needing to experience the pain of realizing her absence.
