Thank you for this. Another great female painter in the same vein as this is Artemisia Gentileschi.

Plus, during some time periods, women were simply not allowed to be painters. How are you supposed to be one of the greatest painter if you’re not allowed to do so ?

I want an entire BBC series about specifically women in art history. Instead of picking a time period or art style just tell me about the women who have been overlooked.

The one depicting a woman throwing her rapist down the wall was based on Timocleia of Thebes from Ancient Greece.

    >When the Thracian captain stooped to look into the well, Timocleia pushed him into the well, and then hurled heavy stones into it until the captain died

Thank you for sharing; I’d never heard of her, so went to look up her paintings, and she’s my new favorite.

    [Here’s one](https://www.livingly.com/The+Most+Iconic+Female+Artists+In+History/articles/NwcW24wAP2C/Elisabetta+Sirani) where a lady is holding a man’s head on a platter.

Also camille claudel! She was an astounding sculptor who was destroyed by the culture norms and the men in her life- her story is painfully tragic and her art is powerfully moving. I for the life of me dont understand why there isnt a movie about her yet.

The paintings are “Timoclea”, “Allegory of Justice, Charity, and Prudence”, and “Judith and Holofernes”.

So awesome, thank you! I took art history at a fancy college and her name never came up. Such bullshit.

There has been a trend of metal albums using classical artwork for covers….I reserve this for my future band!!!!

Well deserved, but I dunno if a cadaver in your drinking supply is a good idea.

    Honestly…

    Honestly, honestly, holy shit, honestly…

We need to completely change the content schools teach. It’s to the benefit of the cis/straight/white male perspective, it (almost) completely erases poc, LGBTQIA+, and women who have done amazing things, and in places like America it is propaganda that gives children the impression that all great things came from the US.

We don’t need new versions of the same textbook, we need different textbooks.

Like, I’m American and I am still furious that I was taught in elementary school that the native Americans and pilgrims were friends and made turkey and ate good food, and that’s *still being taught*

    I don’t usually condone book burning…

    But I do like fire…
