Charm casting is a type of divination that includes a collection of charms, a flat surface, and something to hold all your charms, this can be a box, bag, anything.

The charms are typically something that has some personal meaning, like a bell to me that I got at a childhood event means happiness and good things, because that day was wonderful, but they can just have an attached symbolism. Once you’ve assigned meanings to each item (I highly recommend writing a description of each one to help remember), ask a question, take a few, and then gently toss them onto the surface.

Many people use a special cloth for this, sometimes they add sectioned off boxes with subjects, like ‘self’ ‘work’ ‘relationships’ and such. This way they can ask “What can I do to better all of these things?” and they’ll get the answer based on where the charm drops.

Some formations mean certain things to people, like one charm overlapping another is typically a sign of one thing smothering another. Like perhaps the charm representing stress overlaps on your charm for success, this could mean that your success is being hindered by your stress.

This is very similar to bone casting, but I honestly prefer this because I love collecting things. If you found this helpful, please let me know in a comment! Thank you for reading this, I hope I’ve explained this well.

I recently learned about charm casting! I find it helps me make decisions, and use my collected trinkets for good. These don’t have to be little metal figures either- some of my charms are a piece of wood and a plastic bead.

I also recently learned about this divination technique. I find it interesting. It’s like throwing stones, ogham sticks or runes, but instead of a culturally accepted predetermined meaning for each piece, it’s a personal meaning. Even with the items being personally found, it means the power comes directly from the individual, instead of using a “tradition” or other way of presetting the meanings. It’s leaning towards Chaos Magick more. I like this idea.

What are some benefits or downsides you’ve found using this method?

I utilize the method of “if it overlaps there’s meaning” which is really helpful with one of my charms which is simply a clear circular glass gem(? Idk what you call it, it’s like the little things you might find in aquariums or at the bottom of a vase) with a flat bottom. It has a magnifying effect and I relate it to “needs clarity/issue needs meditation” on certain readings. Others it’s also the truth teller….it magnifies the issue or the answer I was looking for. It’s been super helpful and was just something I found randomly.

Interesting. When I was taught charm casting, it was called throwing lots. Interesting how the name has changed. It’s definitely the same idea! I wonder if the name is more regional.
