I have been stalking this thread for months. I have always been drawn to spells, magic, and various ~otherworldly~ things. I am just not sure where to even start. I feel a deep connection to nature and find healing when I’m in it. I just feel overwhelmed. I come very a very Christian family so this has never been something I learned about. Oddly enough my dad IS a D&D game master but that’s about as close as it gets lol

Any advice on how or where to start would be so helpful from you lovely wise witches. Any questions you may have I would love to answer to get started in a good direction.

I think it’s best if you start of small. making tiny spell jars were a go to for me when beginning witchcraft, of course you should learn how to make them first. studying herbs and crystal properties are also great, you can easily find their properties on the internet. go on small nature walks. learn how to make moon/sun water. and study the moon and it’s phases.

it’s your choice to keep your practice a secret to your family or atleast until you feel ready to tell them 🙂

these are all small things you can try, you don’t have to do all of them but i personally did them when starting. blessed be <3

Hey u/Wide-Albatross-3902 witchcraft is nothing to be scared of. In fact, you have probably been practicing it for ages. What Christians and other religions call prayers, is actually extremely powerful witchcraft!!! The whole Christian faith is largely derived from the European Pagan religions that the early Catholics adopted into their teachings and faith, to make it easier for the subjugated pagans to follow their God Christ and become part of the church.

I will not get into the whole History of Christ, but please let me be clear on this fact: Jesus Christ was the greatest wizard the world has ever known, or he is just the son of God, or both. I love to remind my Christian friends of this verse from the Bible (I’m paraphrasing) Christ said, “all of this that I can do, you can do and more!” I like that a lot.

Other than The Merlin, Christ is greatest wizard the world has ever known. Which gets me to thinking, “all of this that I can do, you can do and more”.

    Happy Easter!

I recommend giving a read of Christopher Penczak’s Inner Temple of Witchcraft. It’s well written and offers information in a variety of practises like meditation that will give you a good foundation to build whatever practise you end up having. He is Wiccan, but I’ve never found him very preachy with it, it’s just a bias in the writing to account for. Also, if you get into herbs, Scott Cunningham’s book on those is great, listing loads of correspondences and making the inevitable substition easier.

What I love about this practice is that it’s personal to you. But I will always recommend learning to protection yourself & Cleansing your home/space first.Read and see what you’re generally interested in & want to work on for yourself.

Go out into Nature somewhere, and just open up and feel. Feel the ground beneath your feet, and know you are connected. Feel the breeze in the air, and notice the breath of life you share with it. Feel the heat of the Sun on your body, and feel the fire in you of your spirit. Feel the water in a stream, river, lake, the ocean, and feel its power flowing through your veins. Nature. It all starts there. Where your path will lead after that is your choice. BB.

I’ve been reading Magic for the Resistance by Michael Hughes and finding it very helpful. I finally set up an altar using guidance from the book.

yeah, that was me a while ago! i’d say start with the basics- learn how to protect yourself, discernment, cultural appropriation, how to spellwork, then move onto areas you’re more interested in eg energywork.

but at the very least, learn how to protect yourself, because that will involve a lot of other areas as a starting point and it’s very, very needed. good luck!

oh, also if you want to find some good resources, there’s a lot of good ones on ARCHIVES (when it opens again, the link would be discord.gg/occult but for now [here’s](https://archives-discord.tumblr.com/) the tumblr) if you have discord, and if you don’t, there’s a lot of stuff on [zlib](https://z-lib.org/), which is a place you can get free books. i reccomend Jason Miller – protection and reversal magick!

My suggestion is to start with what’s interesting for you. I also came from a Christian household so when I started dabbling in witchcraft I felt like I didn’t really know much. But I did find an interest in the zodiac and felt a connection to the moon so that’s where I started. Now 3 years later the zodiac isn’t even that big of a part of my practice, but it was a great jumping off spot. I highly suggest reading as many books as you can get your hands on. Check out your local library for witchy books. Mine even has ebooks which makes it really convenient! And start a journal. Write everything down from dreams, interesting things you read, ideas for spells, questions, conversations, signs, associations.. you’ll be thankful one day to be able to look back and see the things you wrote down. And the last thing I’ll say is take everything you read with a grain of salt. There are certain books I’ve read that I really didn’t vibe with, and they actually made me grow more as a witch because they pointed me towards what I did feel to be true. Start identifying your intuition, trusting it, and go from there. Hope this helps!
