Is the Sun made more important or influential because it’s in its Joy? How is that weighed up against the fact that the Sun is Cadent, which usually means less powerful?

What type or qualities or experiences should we expect to see in people with the Sun in its Joy?

i don’t think it’s necessarily stronger per se. it’s more like it’s doing activities that naturally line up with itself. planets in the 9th house act through sending you on special journeys, teaching you divine knowledge, and giving you dreams. these activities are solar in that they increase wisdom and make you a more powerful authority for yourself.

what does the sun do? it highlights, selects, prioritizes, and organizes you around something. it gives you orientation and centers you. having this act through dreams, pilgrimages/special journeys, religion/spirituality, divine knowledge… it basically means you center your self using these things. maybe you had a really special trip that was formative to who you are. maybe your spiritual beliefs are core to everything you are and do.

with respect to cadency: cadent means that you don’t have control. it’s a falling house, it just happens and there’s not much to do about that. think about divine intervention and religious experiences: you can’t really control them, they just happen to you. they can be good and really speak to you but they are out of your control. you can’t force the journey to be special, it is that way or it isnt.

this is how all of the joys work. the planet is doing activities for you that line up with itself. mercury conveying and interfacing in the 1st house, the moon acting through your immediate surroundings in the 3rd, venus playing and spending time with the kids in the 5th, mars doing hard labor and fighting off sickness in the 6th, the sun bringing divine inspiration in the 9th, jupiter giving a helping hand in the 11th, and saturn drawing out and isolating you in the 12th. for all of them, these are topics that naturally come up for those planets.

    good question!

these are my thoughts (personal and subjective):

might have to do something with the fact that the 9h main focus is on who you truly are and what you are doing here and what your purpose is… and the sun in astrology is exactly that: your true self and your main purpose.

Here’s just a tiny snippet on the cadent bit, from Demetra George’s book Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice, Volume I, Chapter 72, The Ninth House / God (Theos), page 755:

    >*God (Greek Theos) is the ancient nae for hte ningth house where the Sun finds his joy. While it ie a cadent house, sloping down from the Midheaven, it nevertheless partakes of a certain power from its proximity to the heights of the chart, as well as from its superior trine to the life force of the Ascendant. For these reasons it is called the “good cadent”.*
    >

    >
    >*The primary topics of the ninth house include religion, faith, wisdom, divination, pilgrimage, and long-distance travel. These activities aptly reflect the “metacosmic” quality of the houses (metakosmios), for they place a person in liminal spaces or states of mind that are “between worlds”. We have seen that the Moon goddess rejoices in the third house. She is the feminine counterpart of the Sun god who rejoices in the ninth. Both god and goddess preside over sacred activities and trave*l.

There is more on the Sun and the 9th, but I can’t put the whole chapter here.

(I thought I had something more on the Sun’s Joy from another source, but still looking for it.)

Following this! Apparently, my 9th house sun (Leo) & 3rd house moon (Aquarius) are both in their joy.

I love this sub. I always leave with something new to learn about.

I have begun to consider the Sun in a chart as a form of divine expression of the individual. It would make sense the Sun would rejoice in the house of higher learning.

Demetra George says planets In the house of their joy are improved in their dignity. So moon in 3rd, Venus in 5th are more likely to bring positive significations to the native.

From what I’ve gathered, “Joys“ are just used to indicate/correlate thematic significance of the planet and have no bearing on dignity itself. Somebody can tell me more about it if I’m wrong.

I have Saturn in its “joy” (12H) and can’t figure out if this is good or bad. 🤷
